Some properties of impregnated and grafted V2O5/MgO catalysts were investigated by the aid of Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), laser Raman spectroscopy (LRS), temperature programmed reduction (TPR) and Brunauer, Emmett, and Teller (BET) surface area measurements. It can be seen that crystalline V2O5 was not detected at relatively low V2O5 contents by FTIR and XRD on MgO-supported catalysts. Evidence from Raman spectroscopy and TPR indicated in some respects that various types of vanadia species were found to be present in MgO: monomeric vanadyls, one- and/or two-dimensional vanadate chains and crystallites of V2O5 at high V2O5 content only. Also, it is difficult to identify clearly the formation of the 'three-dimensional' binary oxide Mg2V2O7 for these types of catalysts.en_US
