dc.description.abstractThe study aims to evaluate the role of germination conditions for almond [Prunus dulcis (Mill.) D.A. Webb] seeds. For the experiments in vitro germination, sterile almond seeds were cultured on 1/4 MS+100 mM NaCl, 1/4 MS (Murashige and Skoog) medium and for the control group on agar medium (agar and water only). The media used in the experiments was supplemented with 30 g/L sucrose and with 7 g/L agar. Data on the shoot number and the length of seedlings, the root number and the length were recorded after three weeks. The results indicated that the highest germination percentage was achieved on the agar-water medium (100%) or on 1/4 MS medium (92%). It was also found that the seed germination percentage was negatively affected by salinity (100 mM NaCl). A continious yellowing and necrosis on germinated seedling were observed too. The same conditions (1/4 MS+100 mM NaCl, 1/4 MS and tap water) was applied to the experiments in vivo. For this purpose seeds were planted on a mixture of peat and sand (2:1 w/w). The germination percentage of the seeds was found to be very slow and weak in all tested groups.en_US
