Öğe Aspirin use in branch retinal vein occlusion in diabetic and hypertensive patients(2013) Önder H.I.; Tunç M.; Yüksel H.; Önder E.; Kaya M.Purpose: The aim was to investigate whether aspirin use is a risk factor in Branch retinal vein occlusion in hypertensive and diabetic patients. Materials and Methods: The study included 30 hypertensive patients who were diagnosed branch retinal vein occlusion. Visual acuity, width of retinal hemorrhages, macular edema and retinal neovascularization were compared between aspirin using and non-using patients. Results: Of the 30 cases, 18 were using aspirin, 12 were not. Visual acuity less than 0.1 was observed in 10 of 18 aspirin using patients and 3 of 12 non-using patients (p = 0.09). There was no correlation between visual acuity and wide of retinal hemorrhage. Conclusion: The use of aspirin in patients with well controlled hypertension and diabetes may positively effect the visual outcome.Öğe Effectiveness of intravitreal bevacizumab injection in patients has macular edema due to central retinal vein occlusion(Gazi Eye Foundation, 2014) Şahin M.; Yüksel H.; Şahin A.; Cingü A.K.; Türkcü F.M.; Çinar Y.; Çaça I.Purpose: To evaluate effectiveness of intravitreal bevacizumab injection (IVBI) in patients has with macular edema (ME) due to central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO). Materials and Methods: Between January 2007-May 2012 the patients who treated with IVBI due to ME secondary to CRVO was rewieved retrospectively. Patients demographic characteristics, medical history, complete ophthalmologic examination including visual acuity(VA) before and after IVBI, optical coherence tomography and central macular thickness (CMT), fundus angiography, retinal ischemia were recorded. VA measurements were converted to LogMAR. CRVO was divided into 2 groups as ischemic and nonischemic. Results: 22 (16 male, 6 female) eyes of 22 patients were included. The age of the patients was 60.9±10.5 (39-80) years. Five of the patients were ischemic and 17 of them were nonischemic. The age of ischemic and nonischemic group was 64.6±9.5, 60.4±11 years, respectively (p>0.05). IVBI was applied 3.2±0.8 times in ischemic group and 2.0±1.1 times in nonischemic group. The follow up time was 3.7±2 months (1-6 months). All patients' baseline, 1, 3, 6. month VA were 1.28±0.71, 0.92±0.55, 0.93±0.35 and 0.70±0.49 LogMAR respectively. Although not significant, final VA was increased according to first VA. The CMT measurement of patients was 630±169 ?m in baseline, in 1. month it was 395±152 ?m, at 3.month they were 465±243 ?m, at 6. month they were 395±98 ?m level and there was statistically significant decrease according to the baseline record, 1, 3 and 6. month. Conclusion: Although IVBI is an effective treatment for ME due to CRVO there was an increase in VA in short term, the main limitations are being effective in short term and needing repeated injections. © 2015 Hematolojik Hastaliklarda Góz Bulgulari.Öğe Frequency of retinopathy of prematurity in preterm babies with a birth weight more than 1500 gram(2012) Şahin M.; Şahin A.; Cingü A.K.; Çinar Y.; Türkcü F.M.; Karabel D.; Yüksel H.Purpose: To evaluate the frequency of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in preterm babies with a birth weight (BW) over 1500 g. Material and Methods: The medical records of premature babies examined between July 2010 and June 2012 were retrospectively evaluated. Babies with a BW over 1500 g were enrolled to the study. BW, gestational age (GA), onset and grade of retinopathy, oxygen treatment, multiple pregnancy and accompanying systemic diseases were investigated. Results: Of the total 65 premature babies, 41 were male (63%), and 24 were female (37%). ROP developed in 13 (20%) babies. In babies with ROP, the mean GA was 29.7±1.5 (28-32) weeks and the mean BW was 1838±333 g (1530-2600 gr). All babies with ROP received supplementary oxygen therapy. Of the babies with ROP, 5 were stage-1, 6 were stage-2, and 2 were stage-3. Three patients with ROP (4.6%) needed treatment with argon laser photocoagulation (LPC) (n=2) or intravitreal bevacizumab injection (n=1). One of these had respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), one had RDS and sepsis together and one had hydrocephalus. 21 of 65 babies were one of twin pairs and one was one of the triplets. There were 5 twin pairs in the ROP group. Conclusion: ROP developed in 20% of the babies with a BW over 1500 g. Nearly 25% of them needed treatment. In conclusion, even if preterm babies have a BW over 1500 g they still have considerable risk for development of ROP, particularly if they have additional systemic diseases or a history of supplementary oxygen treatment, and they should be examined regularly.Öğe Ocular findings in patients with waardenburg syndrome(Duzce University Medical School, 2013) Önder H.I.; Tunç M.; Yüksel H.; Silan F.; Kaya M.Waardenburg Syndrome (WS) is a heterogenous group of auditory-pigmentary syndromes.WS is characterized by the association of pigmentation abnormalities, including depigmented patches of the skin and hair, vivid blue eyes or heterochromia irides, and sensorineural hearing loss. Hearing loss and other phenotypic expression is highly variable. WS can be seen with a frequency of 1/20000 - 1/42000 in different populations. © 2013 Düzce Medical Journal.Öğe Outcomes of photodynamic therapy with a half dose of verteporfin in patients with chronic central serous chorioretinopathy(2013) Türkcü F.M.; Yüksel H.; Şahin A.; Çinar Y.; Cingü K.; Şahin M.; Yildirim A.Purpose: To evaluate the effectiveness and the results of photodynamic therapy (PDT) with half the dose verteporfin in chronic central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR). Materials and Methods: Nineteen eyes of 19 patients diagnosed with chronic CSCR were included in the study. The diagnoses were made by fundus fluorescein angiography and optical coherence tomography (OCT). Corrected logMAR visual acuity (VA) and central macular thickness (CMT) were analyzed before and after treatment. The baseline and the sixth month results were compared. Results: The mean age of the patients was 37.4±6.1 and 16 (84.2%) of them were male, 3 (15.8%) of them were female. The mean follow-up time was 7.9±2.2 (6-12) months. After PDT, 15 (78.9%) of cases gained minimum one line increase in VA. In three (15.8%) patients visual acuity remained unchanged and in a patient (5.3%) VA decreased one line. There was a significant reduction (p = 0,001) in the mean CMT values when compared before and after PDT. Subretinal fluid in OCT resolved completely in 17 (89.4%) patients and partially in one (5.3%) patients but it showed an increase only in one patient (5.3%). There was not any complication due to PDT in any patients. Conclusion: Photodynamic therapy with a half the dose verteporfin was considered as an effective treatment in the patients with chronic CSCR.Öğe Response: Comment on: Mean platelet volume in patients with retinal artery occlusion(Conselho Brasileiro De Oftalmologia, 2016) Şahin M.; Şahin A.; Yüksel H.; Türkcü F.M.; Yildirim A.[No abstract available]Öğe Result of treatment and follow-up in our cases with active ocular toxoplasmosis(Gazi Eye Foundation, 2014) Türkcü F.M.; Yüksel H.; Şahin A.; Çinar Y.; Cingü K.; Şahin M.; Yildirim A.Purpose: To evaluate the clinical characteristics, follow-up findings and treatment outcomes of patients diagnosed as active ocular toxoplasmosis (OT) in our clinic. Material and Methods: The data of seventy five active OT patients seen between 2009 and 2012 were analyzed retrospectively. Age, gender, visual acuity, laterality, follow-up findings, treatment modalities, complications, and recurrence rate of the patients were evaluated. Results: Active OT was diagnosed in 75 eyes of 75 patients. The mean age of the patients was 26.3±7.8 years with 47 (62.7%) females and 28 (37.3%) were males. The detected involvement sites were 60% central and 40% peripheral. All the patients had active lesions at the time of application. Contralateral chorioretinal scars were identified in 17.3% of the patients. The mean follow-up was 15.1±10.0 months. Complications were cataract formation in 2 patients, posterior synechiae in 5 patients, vitreous condensation in 2 patients and epiretinal membrane formation in 4 patients. Recurrence rate was 38.7% during follow-up and recurrences were all in the same eye. Conclusion: Ocular toxoplasmosis is the most common infectious uveitis. Although it is a self-limiting disease, treatment and follow-up are very important because of potential reduction in vision caused by serious complications. Early treatment and long term follow-up are essential to prevent to development of sequelae and ensure early detection of complications in patient with active OT.Öğe Serum prolidase enzyme activity and oxidative status in patients with scleroderma(Acta Medica Mediterranea, 2014) Bozkurt M.; Dağ Ş.; Oktayoglu P.; Em S.; Yüksel H.; Çağlayan M.; Sariyildiz M.A.Objective: To assess serum prolidase enzyme activity and oxidative stress in patients with scleroderma (also known as systemic sclerosis, or SSc) and determine its relationship with serum oxidative status. Methods: The study population consisted of SSc patients (n = 21) and healthy participants (n =29). Serum prolidase enzyme activity, total antioxidant status (TAS), total oxidative status (TOS), oxidative stress index (OSI), and paraoxonase-1 (PON-1) levels were compared betweeen the two groups. Results: The mean duration of SSc involvement was 5 years; and the mean modified Rodnan skin score was 16. No statistically significant differences existed between the SSc groups and the control participants in terms of age, gender, TAS, PON-1, and haematocrit levels. Serum prolidase activity, OSI, and TOS levels were statistically significantly higher in SSc patients in comparison with controls participants. Also serum prolidase activity was statistically higher in Raynaud's phenomenon positive patients than Raynaud's phenomenon negative patients. But no correlation emerged between the serum prolidase activity and modified Rodnan Skin Score (P=0.235, r=0.304). Conclusion: High prolidase activity may indicate critical biological activities relevant to pathological events in SSc, and this activity may be a biological indicator of disease. Further studies are needed to verify these findings.
