Öğe Copper and ceruloplasmin levels are closely related to the severity of preeclampsia(Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2020) Sak, Sibel; Barut, Mert; Celik, Hakim; Incebiyik, Adnan; Agacayak, Elif; Uyanikoglu, Hacer; Kirmit, AdnanObjective: The aim of this study was to investigate the maternal serum concentrations of copper (Cu) and ceruloplasmin (CP) in patients with mild preeclampsia, severe preeclampsia, hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelet count (HELLP) syndrome, and to determine their association with the severity of the disease. Methods: This study was carried out at the largest tertiary care health center in the southeast region in Turkey and Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dicle University Hospital. A total of 179 pregnant women, including 58 healthy pregnant women and 71 mild preeclampsia, 26 severe preeclampsia, and 24 HELLP syndrome cases classified according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists? 2013 guidelines were included in this prospective study. Blood samples were taken from all the pregnant women to evaluate the serum Cu and CP levels. The Cu level was determined via atomic absorption/emission spectroscopy, while the serum CP level was assessed with a nephelometric assay using an automatic image analyzer. Spearman?s rank correlation tests were used to determine the correlations between the serum levels of the antioxidative markers and the preeclampsia severity. Results: The mean???SD of the Cu was 81.2???11.84 ?g/dl in the mild preeclampsia cases and 160.2???20.89 ?g/dl in the severe preeclampsia cases (p?Öğe The effect of pentavalent antimonial compounds used in the treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis on hemogram and biochemical parameters(Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2019) An, Isa; Harman, Mehmet; Esen, Mustafa; Celik, HakimObjective: The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of pentavalent antimonials used in the treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) on hemogram and biochemical parameters. Material and methods: The study consisted of 168 patients diagnosed with CL after microscopic examination and treated with either systemic sodium stibogluconate (SSG) or meglumine antimonate (MA) 20 mg/kg/day for 14 days. The patients were divided into two groups as SSG and MA patients. Neutrophil count, leukocyte count, lymphocyte count, hemoglobin concentration, platelet count, amylase, lipase, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), blood urea nitrogen and serum creatinine levels were compared before and on the 14th day of the treatment. Results: There was a statistically significant decrease in the neutrophil, lymphocyte, leukocyte, platelet counts, and hemoglobin and blood urea nitrogen levels on the 14th day of the treatment when compared to the pre-treatment values. A statistically significant increase was found in the ALT, AST, amylase and lipase levels. No significant change was found in the serum creatinine levels. Conclusion: According to the results of our study, pentavalent antimonials given standard doses in the treatment of CL can lead to an increase in the pancreatic enzymes and transaminases and bone marrow suppression. We do not recommend any change in the treatment if these conditions are not corroborated by clinical findings.Öğe Lipid peroxidation markers in adult attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: New findings for oxidative stress(Elsevier Ireland Ltd, 2013) Bulut, Mahmut; Selek, Salih; Bez, Yasin; Kaya, Mehmet Cemal; Gunes, Mehmet; Karababa, Fatih; Celik, HakimMalondialdehyde (MDA) is a reliable marker of lipid peroxidation where paraoxonase and arylesterase are two enzymes against it. Although increased MDA has been previously shown in adults with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (A-ADHD), levels of paraoxonase and arylesterase enzymes have not been studied yet. We aimed to determine the status of both MDA level and paraoxonase and arylesterase enzyme activities in A-ADHD patients. A total of 35 adults with ADHD diagnosis according to Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders fourth edition (DSM-IV) criteria and 29 healthy volunteers were included in the study. Serum MDA, paraoxonase and arylesterase levels of the participants were measured. The disease severity of the patients was determined by using Turgay's Adult Attention Deficit Disorder/Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADD/ADHD) DSM IV Based Diagnostic Screening and Rating Scale. The serum MDA level of patients was significantly higher than that of healthy control subjects, whereas their paraoxonase and arylesterase levels were significantly lower. There was no correlation between the levels of biochemical parameters (MDA, paraoxonase and arylesterase) and the disease severity. Sub-types of A-ADHD were similar in terms of these biochemical parameters. Increased lipid peroxidation, a part of oxidative stress, in adults with ADHD appears to be unbuffered by antioxidant enzymes, namely paraoxonase and arylesterase. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. Ceruloplasmin, an acute phase reactant with antioxidant capacity, has been found to be increased in some psychiatric disorders like schizophrenia and obsessive compulsive disorder. However, studies in depression are very scarce. We under-took this study determine the serum ceruloplasmin levels of depressive patients before and after treatment, to compare them with those of healthy control subjects, and to assess any possible association of ceruloplasmin and treatment response. Methods. Nineteen (8 male, 11 female) patients with major depressive disorder and 40 (17 male, 23 female) healthy control subjects were included in the study. The patients received naturalistic antidepressant treatment for 8 weeks after diagnosis. Serum ceruloplasmin levels and Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D) scores of the patients were measured before and after their antidepressant treatment. Blood collection for ceruloplasmin measurement was done only once for healthy control subjects. Results. Patients' ceruloplasmin levels before and after antidepressant treatment were significantly higher than control subjects (t = 7.569, p < 0.001 and t = 6.764, p < 0.001, respectively). Despite clinical improvement, ceruloplasmin did not show any significant change after treatment in patients with depression (t = -1.163, p = 0.260) and remained higher than levels of control subjects. No correlation was found between HAM-D score, presence of response, and ceruloplasmin levels. Conclusions. Compared to healthy control subjects, ceruloplasmin level seemed to be higher in patients with depression and remained high, despite acute antidepressant treatment. Improvement in clinical measurements of depression after antidepressant treatment was not reflected as significant alterations in serum ceruloplasmin levels. (C) 2012 IMSS. S. Maney & Son Limited We aimed to evaluate the association of serum paraoxonase and arylesterase activities and oxidative/ antioxidative status in patients with fibromyalgia. Forty-two patients with fibromyalgia and 53 healthy controls were included in the study. Serum paraoxonase and arylesterase activities were measured spectrophotometrically. Oxidative and antioxidative status were evaluated by measuring serum lipid hydroperoxide ( LOOH) levels, total antioxidant status ( TAS) and free sulfhydryl groups ( - SH = total thiol). Lipid parameters were determined by routine laboratory methods. Serum paraoxonase and arylesterase activities, and TAS were lower in patients with fibromyalgia than in controls ( P < 0.001, for all), and the - SH level was also lower in the patient group ( P = 0.03). LOOH levels were higher in the patient group than in controls ( P = 0.01). Our results suggest that patients with fibromyalgia were exposed to oxidative stress, and paraoxonase and arylesterase activities were decreased in these patients. Patients with fibromyalgia might be prone to development of atherosclerosis with reduced paraoxonase and arylesterase activities.Öğe Preliminary study of efficacy of hyaluronic acid on caustic esophageal burns in an experimental rat model(W B Saunders Co-Elsevier Inc, 2013) Cevik, Muazez; Demir, Tuncer; Karadag, Cetin Ali; Ketani, Muzaffer Aydin; Celik, Hakim; Kaplan, Davut Sinan; Boleken, Mehmet EminBackground: The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of hyaluronic acid on the prevention of esophageal damage and stricture formation after experimental caustic (alkaline) esophageal injury in rats. Materials and Methods: Twenty-one Wistar albino rats were randomly divided into three groups. A caustic esophageal burn was created following the Gehanno model: Group 1 (n=7) underwent operation, but no injury; Group 2 (n=7) was injured and left untreated; and Group 3 (n=7) was injured and treated with hyaluronic acid, first topically and then orally by gavage (2 x 0.3 mL; 12.5 mg/mL for 7 days). The caustic esophageal burn was created by instilling 25% NaOH into the distal esophagus. All rats were euthanized on day 22 for evaluation. The efficacy of hyaluronic acid treatment was assessed histopathologically and biochemically via blood determination of the total antioxidant status (TAS), total oxidant status (TOS), oxidative stress index (OSI), and sulfhydryl group (SH) and lipid hydroperoxidase (LOOH) levels. Statistical analyses were performed. Results: Weight gain was significantly lower in Group 2 than in the other two groups (P<0.05). The mean stenosis index, histopathologic damage score, TAS, TOS, OSI, and SH and LOOH levels were higher in Group 2 than in the other two groups. The mean stenosis index, inflammation, TAS, SH and OSI in Group 2 were significantly different than those in the other two groups (P<0.05). Conclusion: Hyaluronic acid treatment is effective in treating damage and preventing strictures after caustic esophageal burn in rats. (c) 2013 Elsevier Inc.
