dc.description.abstract1875-1877 yıllarında Bağdat Vilayeti’nde ciddi bir veba salgını yaşanmıştır. Özellikle Bağdat İngiliz Başkonsolosluğuna ait yazışma ve kayıtlarda bölgede yaşanan salgına büyük ehemmiyet verilmiştir. İncelediğimiz dönemde söz konusu konsolosluğun doktoru olan Cerrah Binbaşı William Henry Colvill’in dönemin Bağdat Başkonsolosu Albay John Pigott Nixon’a, İstanbul İngiliz Büyükelçiliğine ve İngiltere Dışişleri Bakanlığına sunmuş olduğu raporlarda ve istatistiki bilgilerde bölgede yaşanan trajedi gözler önüne serilmiştir. Bilhassa salgının zirve yaptığı Nisan-Mayıs aylarında ortaya çıkan ölüm oranları, vebanın bölgede neden olduğu insan kaybının ne boyutlara ulaştığını göstermektedir. Su ve karayolları üzerinde kurulan dâhili ve harici karantina istasyonlarına, ev ablukalarına, dezenfekte çalışmalarına ve alınan diğer tüm önlemlere rağmen yaşanılan ölüm vakalarının önüne geçilememiştir. Çalışmamız temel olarak Doktor Colvill’in yukarıda zikrettiğimiz İngiliz makamlarına sunmuş olduğu haftalık-aylık veba raporlarına ve ölüm istatistiklerine, yapılan teşhis ve tedavi çalışmalarına, alınan önlemlere ve değerlendirmelere dayanmaktadır.en_US
dc.description.abstractThere was a serious plague epidemic in Baghdad between 1875-1877. Especially, great importance has been given to that epidemic in the correspondences and records belonging to the British General Consulate in Baghdad. The tragedy in the region has been revealed in the reports and the statistical informations which have been submitted by Surgeon-Major William Henry Colvill who is a doctor of the mentioned consulate in the period that we studied, to the Colonel John Pigott Nixon who is Consulate General at Baghdad, the British Embassy in Istanbul and the British Foreign Office. In particular, the rates of death that occurred during AprilMay, when the epidemic reached its highest point, show that how the loss of man has reached the these dimensions caused by plague in the region. In spite of internal and external quarantine stations established in the waterways and overland routes, house blockades, disinfection work and all other precautions taken, the death cases have not been prevented. Our work is based mainly on the weekly-monthly plague reports and on the death statistics, diagnosis and treatment work done, precautions and evaluations that has been presented by Dr. Colvill to the British authorities we cited above.en_US
