(Anadolu Psikiyatri Dergisi 2003; 4:144-150)
Objective: The aim of the study was to determine the levels of anxiety and depression, and the frequency of suicide attempts and harmful habits in senior students of the high schools. Method: A part of 3rd class students of 6 high schools at the centrum of Mardin were involved. Sociodemographic Information Form, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), State Anxiety Inventory (STAI-I) and Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-II) were applied to a total of 444 students. Results: The mean age was 16.8 years, 59% of whom were male, and 89% were living with their parents. 81.8% of their father and 47.5% of their mother had at least primary level of education. Their mean inventory points were determined as BDI=13.7, STAI-I=42.7, and STAI-II=43.8. In 58% of the students’ STAI-I point, in 66% STAI-II point were 41≤;and in 37% BDA point were 17≤. Female students had higher STAI-II points. There was a positive correlation between BDI, STAI-I, and STAI-II points (p=0.0001). 81.3% of the families were small, 89% of the students were living with their families. 8.6% of the students were daily smoker, 1.6% were taking alcohol 1 or 2 times a week. 36.3% of the students had thought about suicide, 1.8% had attempted once, 17.4% were hopeless about the future. In the students with high BDI, STAI-I and STAI-II points, there were more hopeless about the future, and more history of thinking suicide and attempting suicide. The students who were smoker had higher points of these three inventories. Discussion: About 2/3 of students at had higher anxiety and 1/3 of who had higher depressive mood than threshold levels. Frequency of attempting suicides was about 2% throughout the life. Cigarette and alcohol usage rates were less than most of the other Turkish cities. Considering the risk groups, it’s a useful approach to condense guidance and counseling services in high schools. (Anatolian Journal of Psychiatry 2003; 4:144-150)
