On the Meanings of the Word Pes in Old Anatolian Turkish Texts

dc.description.abstractThe different meanings that words acquire depending on the context make them polysemous. Polysemy is an important criterion that demonstrates the wealth of words in terms of meaning. Turkish language bears a remarkable feature in terms of polysemy. This semantic phenomenon has existed since Old Turkish. The meanings of certain words have passed from Old Turkish to Turkey Turkish through semantic expansion. Frequency is also a factor affecting polysemy. Generally, as the frequency of words increases, the number of meanings also increases. These meanings increase even more when the word is used in compound words, proverbs, and idioms. In the Old Anatolian Turkish period, some words were used to convey a variety of meanings. One of these words is "pes". The word "pes" draws attention due to its frequent use and multiple meanings in this period. The word is included in the Tarama Dictionary with several meanings. In the glossary or index sections of the manuscripts of the period, the word pes also appears with meanings parallel to the Tarama Dictionary. However, by reviewing some texts belonging to the Old Anatolian Turkish period, it has been determined that these meanings assigned to the word are insufficient and that the word possesses other meanings as well. The present article focuses on the meanings of the word pes in Old Anatolian Turkish texts.
dc.description.abstractSözcüklerin bağlama göre kazandıkları farklı anlamlar, onları çok anlamlı hâle getirmektedir. Çok anlamlılık, sözcüklerin anlam alanı bakımından zenginliğini gösteren önemli bir ölçüttür. Türk dili çok anlamlılık açısından dikkate şayan bir özellik taşımaktadır. Eski Türkçeden beri bu anlam olayı mevcuttur. Bazı sözcüklerin anlamları, Eski Türkçeden Türkiye Türkçesine anlam genişlemesi yoluyla artarak gelmiştir. Sıklık da çok anlamlılığı etkileyen bir unsurdur. Genellikle sözcüklerin sıklığı arttıkça anlam sayıları da artmaktadır. Bu anlamlar, sözcüğün birleşik sözcük, atasözü ve deyimlerde kullanılmasıyla daha da artmaktadır. Eski Anadolu Türkçesi döneminde de bazı sözcükler çok farklı anlamlara gelecek şekilde kullanılmıştır. Bu sözcüklerden biri “pes” sözcüğüdür. Pes sözcüğü, bu dönemde hem sık kullanılması hem çok anlamlı olması nedeniyle dikkati çekmektedir. Sözcük, Tarama Sözlüğü’nde birkaç anlamla yer almaktadır. Döneme ait yazma eser çalışmalarının sözlük veya dizin kısımlarında da pes sözcüğü, Tarama Sözlüğü’ne paralel anlamlarla geçmektedir. Ancak Eski Anadolu Türkçesi dönemine ait bazı metinler taranmak suretiyle sözcüğe verilen bu anlamların yetersiz olduğu, sözcüğün daha başka anlamlara da sahip olduğu tespit edilmiştir. İşte bu makalede pes sözcüğünün Eski Anadolu Türkçesi metinlerindeki anlamları üzerinde durulmaktadır.
