The prevalence of hepatocellular carcinoma in patients with liver cirrhosis in Southeastern Turkey

dc.description.abstractIn this study, the prevalence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in patients liver cirrhosis in Southeastern Turkey was been investigated. Median age was 47.9 years and female/male ratio was 1/2.2. Ultrasonography (USG), alkalene phasphatose (ALP), alpha fetoprotein (AFP) and ferritin were studied in all cases; CT was performed in suspected cases and HCC was diagnosed by liver biopsy. HCC was found in eight out of 156 patients with liver cirrhosis (5.1%). One of the HCC cases was in Child B, and the others in Child C. Levels of ALP, AFP and ferritin were significantly high (p<0.001). All cases were male and the average age was 56.2. HBsAg was positive in all cases. In addition anti-HCV and anti-HDV were positive in two patients. HCC was located in the right lobe in all cases. It was localized type (2 to 7 cm) in seven cases and diffuse type in one case. In conclusion, the prevalence of HCC seems to be lower than expected (5.1%) in our region in spite of the high frequency of liver cirrhosis. The short survival period, severity of complications and genetic properties of viral agents may be important. The levels of ALP, AFP and ferritin and examination of USG are important in follow up of patients. Hepatitis B virus is the most important factor not only in liver cirrhosis, but also in HCC cases in our region.en_US
