One hundred and forty-seven hearts (8 humans, 23 dogs, 91 sheep, 25 goats) were investigated in our study. In terms of CT number, while the difference between humans and sheep and goats, and dogs and sheep and goats was significant statistically (p < 0.05), the difference between humans and dogs was less significant than the others. The difference between sheep and goats was not significant statistically (p > 0.05). The number of FCT were not significant (p > 0.05) in the other species while the difference between humans and dogs was significant statistically. The numerical relationship between CT and FCT was positive only in dogs (p = 0.006, r = 0.671), but the difference was not significant statistically (p > 0.05) in the other species. The greatest number of FCT ran from the papillary muscle to the septum, and the others ran from the anterior wall to the septum, the posterior wall to the septum, the septum to the septum and the papillary muscle to the papillary muscle. Histologically CT contain fibrous tissue, FCT contain fibrous or fibromuscular tissue and sometimes also contain conduction tissue and blood vessels. Arrhythmias can arise from FCT because they contain not only fibrous tissue but also muscular and conduction tissue.Öğe Concentrations of trace elements in wild edible mushrooms(Elsevier Sci Ltd, 2001) Isiloglu, M; Yilmaz, F; Merdivan, MThe concentrations of Cu, Cd, Co, Ni, Mn, Pb, Zn and Fe in 66 samples of mushroom fruiting bodies, representing seven species, mainly all edible, were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The mushrooms were collected from near roads and inner parts of forest and lawns in Bahkesir in the north western part of Turkey. The results indicate that the Fe level in the species Volvariella speciosa (Fr.) Sing. from near the road was the highest with a mean of 6990 mg/kg. The level of Ni was the highest in Clitocybe flaccida (Sow.: Fr.) Kummer, from near road with a mean of 3.32 mg/kg. Cu levels were almost similar for both areas within a range of 35-89 mg/kg in the different species. The Cd was accumulated mostly by Lactarius sanguifluus (Paulet: Fr.) Pr. and V. speciosa from near road with a mean of 1.60 mg/kg. Concentration of Mn, Pb, Co and Zn in L. sanguifluus from near road were the highest with means of 63.6, 7.66, 6.03 and 149 mg/kg, respectively. The rats were seperated into two. groups of 8, one control and one experimental group, The rats in the experimental groups were exposed to ELF MF (1.35 mT) 2 hour/a day during two months. Eight rats of sham group were treated like experimental group except ELF MF exposure. The rats were sacrificed under ketalar anesthesia immediately after last exposure. Then parotis, submandibular gland and total ear of rats were removed for. histopathological examination. The histopathological results obtained indicate that ELF magnetic field didn't affect parotis, submandibular glands and inner ear.Öğe Expression of cathepsin D in colorectal adenocarcinomas: Correlation with clinicopathologic features(K Faisal Spec Hosp Res Centre, 2003) Yilmaz, F; Uzunlar, AK; Kilinc, N; Yilmaz, G[Abstract Not Available]Öğe Expression of p53 oncoprotein and bcl-2 in renal cell carcinoma(Saudi Med J, 2005) Uzunlar, AK; Sahin, H; Yilmaz, F; Ozekinci, SObjective: The aim of the present study was to investigate the significance of p53 and bcl-2 as prognostic factors among others in renal cell carcinoma patients. Methods: We evaluated the stages, histological grades, tumor diameters, cellular patterns and the presence of mutant p53 protein and bcl-2 overexpression in 57 cases of renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Kaplan-Meier and log-rank tests estimated the survival function of each parameter. The study was carried out in the Department of Pathology and the Department of Urology, Faculty of Medicine, Dicle University Hospital, Diyarbakir, Turkey, in 2003. Results: The p53 mutation was 35% and bcl-2 overexpression incidence was 89.4% in the RCC cases included in the study. The 5-year disease specific survival rates of mutant p53 positive was 46.6% and p53 negative cases were 83.3%, (p=0.0063). There was no pathological parameter associated in bcl-2, and it has no prognostic significance. Conclusion: The tumor stage, grade, diameter and p53 mutations affect the survival of RCC cases. The bcl-2 staining did not play any role to estimate patients at high risk of the disease progression.Öğe Expressions of p53, proliferating cell nuclear antigen, and Ki-67 in gestational trophoblastic diseases(I R O G Canada, Inc, 2002) Uzunlar, AK; Yilmaz, F; Bayhan, G; Akkus, ZObjective: This study was done to determine whether the expressions of p53, PCNA. and Ki-67 could differentiate spontaneous abortions with hydropic changes from gestational trophoblastic diseases. Materials and Methods: Twenty partial hydatidiforin moles, 21 complete hydatidiform moles. nine invasive hydatidiform moles. three choriocarcinomas and 19 first trimester hydropic spontaneous abortions were evaluated by means of immunohistochemical methods with antibodies to p53, PCNA. and Ki-67 in this study. Results: The Ki-67, PCNA, and p53 immunoreactivity was significantly higher in the gestational trophoblastic disease group than in the spontaneous abortion group with hydropic changes. None of the three parameters provided reliable discrimination among gestational trophoblastic disease subgroups. Conclusion: Our findings Suggest that expressions of Ki-67, proliferating cell nuclear antigen and p53 can be used to differentiate between spontaneous abortion with hydropic changes and gestational trophoblastic disease when all three markers are used together.Öğe Heavy metal contents in some macrofungi collected in the northwestern part of Turkey(Springer-Verlag, 2001) Isiloglu, M; Merdivan, M; Yilmaz, FEight metal contents were determined in wild growing macrofungi collected from two different areas in Balikesir and Akhisar (NW Turkey). The analysis has been done by atomic absorption spectrophotometry in 179 samples of 16 species. Pb was accumulated extensively by G. sessile and L. cinerascens in both areas. Concentration of Cd was significantly high in A, pseudopratensis from background area and M. excissa from near road area. The high concentrations of Fe and Zn were found in M, ramealis and L, cinerascens for both areas. The mean concentration of Cu was high in V. pratense from background area and C. butyracea var. butyracea from near road area. The highest mean concentrations of Co and Mn for both areas were seen in G. sessile and M. excissa, respectively. A high Ni concentration was found in G. sessile and H. hypothejus from background area. We found no considerably significant differences in the concentrations of all studied elements between two areas.Öğe Hodgkin's disease and association with Epstein-Barr virus in children in Southeast Turkey(Saudi Med J, 2005) Yilmaz, F; Uzunlar, AK; Sogutcu, N; Ozaydin, MObjectives: There are relatively few reports on histologic and immunophenotypic features of Hodgkin's disease (HD) in children in Turkey. The aim of the present study is to characterize the clinicopathologic, immunophenotypic features and Ebstein-Barr virus (EBV) status of HD in children in our region. Methods: Fifty-two cases coded as HD in the Department of Pathology, Medical Faculty, Dicle University, Turkey, from 1990 to 2002 were retrieved. We analyzed clinicopathologic data, immunophenotype, and EBV status of all patients. Results: In most cases, the cervical lymph nodes were involved. The 52 cases (35 boys, 17 girls; male to female ratio was 2.1) were categorized as mixed cellularity (MC) in 23 (44.2%), lymphocyte predominance (LP) in 16 (30.8%), nodular sclerosis (NS) in 10 (19.2%), and lymphocyte depletion (LD) in 3 (5.8%). Of 33 cases, including MC and NS, Hodgkin's Reed-Sternberg cells and variants were positive for CD15 in 27 cases (81.8%) and positive for CD30 in 30 cases (90.9%). All the cases of LP demonstrated the characteristic phenotype of this variant (CD45RB+, CD20+, CD15-, CD30-). Epithelial membrane antigen stained the lymphocytic/histiocytic cells in 3 cases (18.7%) of 16. Ebstein-Barr virus-LMP1 were positive in 31 cases (61.5%) of a total of 52 cases and the most were MC (91.3%). Conclusion: In conclusion, mixed cellularity HD is the most common histologic subtype. This result differed from that reported in developed countries. We found a striking association with expression of EBV-latent membrane protein 1 in malignant cells in childhood HD.Öğe Huge leiomyoma of the prostate(Scandinavian University Press, 1998) Yilmaz, F; Sahin, H; Hakverdi, S; Arslan, A; Bircan, MK; Kiliç, N[Abstract Not Available]Öğe Limb reconstruction with the callus distraction method after bone tumor resection(Springer, 2000) Kapukaya, A; Subasi, M; Kandiya, E; Özates, M; Yilmaz, FThe callus distraction method was applied to nine patients who were referred to us because of a bone tumor. Their mean age was 17 years and 3 months (range 7-37 years). Three were female, and 6 were male. All of the tumors were localised on the femur, and the histological diagnosis was two chondrosarcomas, one Ewing's sarcoma, three osteosarcomas, one giant cell bone tumor, and the remainder-benign fibrous histiocytoma. The mean length of the defect after resection of the tumor was 11.5 (range 8-20) cm. Preoperative and postoperative chemotherapy were applied to patients with osteosarcoma and Ewing's sarcoma. The patients were followed up for 22 (range 15-30) months on average. The mean period of use of the external fixator was 12.5 (range 8-18) months. One patient suffered a tumour recurrence and died after 20 months. Complications included one deep infection, one skin invagination, and one premature consolidation and bone bridge in the defect area. All of the complications were successfully treated. Functional evaluation gave excellent results in four patients, good in three, and fair in two. This method can be used without any need for massive autogenous bone graft in repairing defects of any length and diameter produced after excision of the lesion and thus can be considered as an alternative to other techniques.Öğe Lymphoepithelial cyst of the mediastinum(Texas Heart Inst, 2005) Ulku, R; Yilmaz, F; Eren, S; Onat, SWe report a rare case of lymphoepithelial cyst of the mediastinum. A 38-year-old woman was found to have a right paratracheal mediastinal mass on chest radiograph. Computed tomographic scanning showed a cystic mass on the right side of the trachea. The encapsulated mass was situated in the upper mediastinum and was adherent to the trachea. The lesion was resected via a right thoracotomy Histopathologic examination showed that the cystic mass was lined with 1 layer of ciliate columnar epithelium. There were no malignant foci. These findings were consistent with a diagnosis of multicystic lymphoepithelial cyst. The postoperative course was uneventful, and the patient was discharged from the hospital on the 7th postoperative day.Öğe Malignant ovarian germ cell tumors(I R O G Canada, Inc, 2003) Yilmaz, F; Gül, T; Uzunlar, AKObjective: In this study, some clinicopathologic characteristics and the outcome of patients with malignant ovarian germ cell tumors (MOGCT) were evaluated. Materials and Methods: The clinical charts and pathologic reports of 32 patients with MOGCT treated at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and diagnosed at the Department of Pathology, Medical Faculty of Dicle University, Turkey from 1983 to 1999 were reviewed. Results: Thirteen patients (40.6%) had dysgerminoma, nine (28.1%) had immature teratoma (four grade 1, three grade 2, and two grade 3), eight (25%) had endodermal sinus tumor, and two (6.3%) patients had mixed germ cell tumors. Site of involvement was unilateral in 30 (19 on the right and 11 on the left) and bilateral in two. All patients underwent primary surgery and 26 patients combination chemotherapy. There seemed to be a relationship between pathologic findings and clinical outcome, and MOGCT histologic types may affect the prognosis. Conclusion: Dysgerminoma had a better prognosis than the nondysgerminomatous group (p < 0.05). This study provides additional data in confirmation of previous reports that management of MOGCT with fertility preservation is safe.Öğe Non-squamous papilloma of the bronchus(Med Assoc S Africa, 2000) Sari, I; Uzunlar, AK; Büyükbayram, H; Ozçelik, C; Yilmaz, F; Özaydin, M[Abstract Not Available]Öğe Prevention of spinal epidural fibrosis by recombinant tissue plasminogen activator in rats(Nature Publishing Group, 2003) Kemaloglu, S; Ozkan, U; Yilmaz, F; Nas, K; Gur, A; Acemoglu, H; Karasu, HStudy design: A randomized-controlled experimental study was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rt-PA) on postlaminectomy epidural fibrosis in rats. Setting: Diyarbakir, Turkey. Methods: In a rat model, allowing objective histopathological quantification, the postoperative epidural scar formation was investigated and the potential of local rt-PA in preventing the production of epidural fibrosis was assessed. Rats were randomly allocated to local rt-PA (12 rats) or control (12 rats). Results: Findings suggest a beneficial effect of rt-PA in decreasing the epidural. fibrosis following laminectomy when compared with control groups for all investigated parameters such as intermuscular scar (P = 0.04), middle scar (P = 0.001), deep scar (P = 0.001) and dural adhesion (P = 0.01) except new bone formation. The presence of arachnoiditis was less in treatment group (P = 0.01). Conclusion: In rats, the topical thrombolysis with rt-PA is safe and efficacious in preventing postlaminectomy epidural. fibrosis. This Thrombolytic therapy with rt-PA after spine surgery may come to play an important role in the prevention of epidural fibrosis and arachnoiditis.Öğe Preventive effects of intracisternal alphatochopherol on cerebral vasospasm in experimental subarachnoid hamorrhage(Yonsei Univ Coll Medicine, 2003) Kemaloglu, S; Özkan, U; Yilmaz, F; Erdem, AK; Acemoglu, H; Ölmez, G; Simsek, RVasospasm is an important cause of morbidity and/or mortality with a subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH). The roles of lipid peroxidation in a vasospasm caused by a SAH remain to be investigated. The effect of an intracisternal administration of alphatochopherol on a cerebral vasospasm was investigated in an experimental model. The authors assessed whether the administration of alpbatochopherol reduced the vasospasm. By means of an intracisternal blood injection model, a SAH was induced in 30 rats, which were randomly divided into three groups, as follows: group I (G1), without a SAH and drug, group II (G2), a SAH alone, group III (G3), a SAH and alphatochopherol. Following the withdrawal of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), a fresh unheparinized arterial blood was injected into the cisterna magna to induce a SAH. In G3, 20 U (0.4ml) alpbatochopherol was intracisternally injected forty-five hours after induction of the SAH. All rats were sacrificed 72 hours after the induction. The basilar artery, with surrounding tissue, was removed from the cranium. The cross-sectional diameter of the lumen and vessel wall of the rat basilar artery was assessed from a planimetric analysis, and changes compared with G1 and G2. The reduction in the luminal cross-sectional diameter of the vessels exposed to subarachnoid blood was found to be 29.01% (p=0.001). The group treated with alphatochopherol bad a 9% reduction (p=0.004). The role of lipid peroxidation on a vasospasm caused by SAH is well known to be critical. Data from the present study indicated that antioxidant therapy, with topical alphatochopherol, may be promising on a vasospasm caused by a SAH.Öğe Protruding urethral leiomyoma obscuring vaginal introitus(East African Medical Journal, 1999) Uzunlar, AK; Özdemir, E; Yilmaz, F; Yaldiz, M; Özaydin, M; Arslan, ALeiomyoma is quite rare in the female urethra. We report an additional case to 29 reported in the literature. A multiparous woman presented with a complaint of a gradually enlarging mass causing dyspareunia for the last seven months. The mass was originating from the upper part of the distal urethra with a relatively thin stalk covered by squamous epithelia, and immunohistopathological examination confirmed it as leiomyoma.
