Öğe Assessment of the decision-making process for re-use of a historical asset: The example of Diyarbakir Hasan Pasha Khan, Turkey(Elsevier France-Editions Scientifiques Medicales Elsevier, 2012) Yildirim, MucahitThe requirements of historical environments that are related to social and economical changes sometimes necessitate the re-use of historical buildings that no longer serve their functions. Deciding how to reuse historical buildings is a difficult problem when the concerns of decision makers are not aligned. This paper proposes a methodology for the appropriate re-use of historical patterns that have lost their original functions and discusses the results of such re-use. Appropriate re-use can result in a sustainable preservation of both historical assets and the environment. Thus, the respectful conversion of structures for new uses based on economic and social needs ensures the authenticity of the structure and of the historical environment. In this study, the historical pattern of Diyarbakir Hasan Pasha Khan was evaluated through the application of the proposed method. Adaptation of the structure required knowledge of traditional construction techniques. The results reveal that the proposed methodology can be effectively used for historical patterns to prioritise between various re-use criteria. This methodology can be applied in the context of re-use problems and provides solutions for such problems in historical buildings. (C) 2012 Elsevier Masson SAS. The most successful examples are the truncated pyramidal-shaped houses.' that have existed for centuries and are unique to the locality; however, these forms are demolished rapidly. In this study, the structures of small-scale settlements in Siirt province and its environs have been evaluated to highlight the cultural aspects of the region. The subject of this research is to investigate the design principles of the rural houses constructed in vernacular style to raise international awareness of the need to preserve vernacular architecture. Surviving examples have been examined in terms of multiple case approach by their forms, spatial compositions, changes in their forms over time, their layouts in urban and rural areas, the construction techniques used to produce them from material production through implementation, the composition of the living space and its uses, their differences or similarities to other houses in the region and their aesthetic details. The research reveals that the design principles of traditional rural architecture offer the use of local material and techniques in a unique way that promote highlights to the future. The study aims to investigate the effects of traditional design forms in the outdoor environmental conditions of passageways. The analysis was carried out to examine the factors of air temperature, solar radiation, wind speed and relative humidity, all of which affect thermal comfort. The goal of this research is to investigate the design principles for achieving thermal comfort in the historical environment of Sanliurfa by means of shading. The study used 10 measurement points to analyse the effects of shading on thermal comfort conditions. The research reveals that the design of the traditional, outdoor shaded spaces of Sanliurfa provides a microclimate in the hot and dry summers of the region, and offers a social space enhanced by comfortable conditions. The microclimatic effects of the passageways on the formation of climate-friendly spaces in Sanliurfa were researched to identify the construction techniques and materials and to see how they contribute to thermal comfort conditions. The results are an approach to the design criteria for creating shaded outdoor spaces in hot and dry climates.Öğe Sustainable development in historic areas: Adaptive re-use challenges in traditional houses in Sanliurfa, Turkey(Pergamon-Elsevier Science Ltd, 2012) Yildirim, Mucahit; Turan, GizemThe adaptive re-use of buildings is an approach for developing historical areas, and it extends the life of historical patterns. However, adaptive re-use is applied to development projects in different ways including compatible re-use and most appropriate re-use, both of which contribute to the sustainability of historic areas. The present study discusses the challenges associated with the compatible re-use and most appropriate re-use approaches for commercial and community development. In the case of commercial development, re-use is generally initiated by private entrepreneurship and is typically a new activity intended to generate income to sufficiently cover restoration and maintenance costs. Examples include the re-using as restaurants and hotels. Community re-use, which is mostly initiated by governmental involvement or development trusts, does not generate sufficient income to cover restoration and maintenance costs, but it does provide social benefits to the community. The present study demonstrates that design criteria can emphasise the significance of cultural heritage through adaptive-reuse. The research methodology used is tested through six selected case studies analysing sustainable development activities involving the traditional houses of Sanliurfa in Turkey. The aim of analysing the changes and their effects on the traditional houses of Sanliurfa and their historical environment is to highlight the challenges and approaches to re-use in terms of development involving historical patterns and conservation areas to provide guidelines for future projects.
