Öğe Comparative Morphometric Study of the Filiform Lingual Papilla in the Middle East Blind Mole Rat (Spalax ehrenbergi, Nehring, 1898) and Wistar Albino Rat(Soc Chilena Anatomia, 2017) Karakoc, Zelal; Ketani, Sennur; Ketani, M. Aydin; Kilinc, MehmetThis study aimed to reveal the morphometric differences between blind mole rats which live under ground and rats which live under laboratory conditions with regard to the length, base width, keratinization thickness and microscopic papilla depth. For this purpose, 7 adult blind mole rats and 7 adult Wistar albino rats were used in the study. All tongues were removed and fixed in 10 % neutral formalin. 4-5 micrometer of sections were obtained from paraffine sections which were obtained with routine histological follow ups and Crossman's modified triple staining was applied. While papilla length was found as 184.73 +/- 26.68 m m, base width 65.46 +/- 16.51 m m, keratinization thickness 11.60 +/- 1.37 m m, microscopic papilla depth 49.89 +/- 8.19 m m in blind rats; these values were found as 177.49 +/- 31.44 m m, 50.08 +/- 7.57 m m, 13.08 +/- 5.32 m m and 89.12 +/- 19.31 m m, respectively in rats. While a statistically significant difference was not detected between lengths (p> 0.05), the difference between papilla width was found significant (p< 0.05). While keratinization was found to be thicker on posterior side compared to anterior side in both species, a difference was not detected between keratinization thickness measurements (p> 0.05). The difference between two species with regard to papilla depth was detected to be significant (p< 0.001). The finding that papilla depth decreases as base width increases and the difference's being statistically significant suggested that living in different environments with different humidity could be effective on morphologic structures of the tongue in blind mole rats and rats.Öğe Dose-dependent effects of propofol on expression ICAM-1 in rabbit aorta endothelial cells(Academic Journals, 2009) Ketani, M. Aydin; Kanay, Berna Ersoez; Ketani, Sennur; Unver, Ozkan; Kilinc, MehmetThe dose-dependent effects of propofol on expression intracellular adhesion molecule (ICAM-1) in rabbit aorta endothelial cells was examined. Twenty adult New Zeland albino rabbits were used in this study. One control and three experimantal groups were designed. In experimantal groups; for group I propofol was not applied, group II 0.5, group III 4.0 and group IV 8.0 mg/kg propofol were applied to rabbits by marginal ear vein. One hour after applying propofol, control and experimantal group rabbits were sacrificed and their aorta were removed. The sections were stained with APAAP immunohistochemical staining for evaluation using a light microscope. This marked ICAM-1 immunoreactivity was maintained in 8.0 mg/kg of propofol applied to rabbits of aorta endothelium, whereas mild stain was observed for other experimantal groups. The present study indicated that there is parallel relationship between endothelial cells ICAM-1 expression and different doses of propofol.Öğe Effects of Dietary Zeolite on Serum Contents and Feeding Performance in Rats(Friends Science Publ, 2011) Demirel, Ramazan; Yokus, Beran; Demirel, Dilek Senturk; Ketani, M. Aydin; Baran, M. SedatThe objective of the present study was to determine the effects of dietary natural clinoptilolite on serum contents, health status and feeding performance of rats. Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats (n=24) were randomly divided into four groups with three replicates including a control group (without zeolite) and three doses of natural zeolite (2, 4 & 6%) in the diets. All rats were fed the above concentrates during the whole experimental period for 56 days. Blood samples were collected from each animal at the end of the experiment. Dietary clinoptilolite increased in serum albumin, triglyceride and VLDL levels (P < 0.05). However, the differences among treatment groups were not significant for serum minerals (Ca, P, Mg, K, Na, Cl, Fe), urea, Fe binding, LDL, alkaline phosphatase, glucose, uric acid, total Fe, total protein, globulin, cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, creatinin; metabolizable energy and crude protein consumption for 1 g live weight gain of rats (P > 0.05). The results showed that the supplementation of clinoptilolite did not have positive effect on serum concentrations of the investigated parameters apart from albumin, triglyceride and VLDL, but they had no negative effect on the health status of animals. (C) 2011 Friends Science PublishersÖğe Expression of cadherins and some connective tissue components in cow uterus and placenta during pregnancy(Elsevier Sci Ltd, 2022) Sagsoz, Hakan; Liman, Narin; Akbalik, M. Erdem; Alan, Emel; Saruhan, Berna Guney; Ketani, M. Aydin; Erdog, SerkanThe implantation and placental development processes are regulated with cell adhesion molecules and remod-eling of the maternal endometrium's extracellular matrices (ECM) and fetal chorion. This study aimed to investigate the distribution and localization of some classical cadherins (E-, N-, and P-cadherins) and extracel-lular matrix components collagen type 5 alpha 1, fibronectin, and laminin in the cow placentomes during pregnancy using immunohistochemical and Western blotting analyses. The study results confirmed the expression of E- and P-cadherins, collagen type V alpha 1 (COLV alpha 1), fibronectin, and laminin in the cow placentomes, but not N-cadherin. Throughout the pregnancy, E-and P-cadherins, COLV alpha 1, and laminin were localized in the luminal and glan-dular epithelium of the inter-caruncular endometrium, caruncular epithelium, and the uninucleate (UNCs) and binucleate trophoblast giant cells (BNCs/TGCs). E- cadherin immunoreactivity in the first pregnancy period was strong in the UNCs while moderate in the BNCs/TGCs. However, it was weak in both trophoblast in the second and third pregnancy periods. In the fetal trophoblasts, P-cadherin and laminin immunostainings were more intense in the BNCs/TGCs than UNCs. The fetal and maternal stromal cells were also positive for P-cadherin, COLV alpha 1, fibronectin, and laminin. The immunostaining intensity of COLV alpha 1 and fibronectin in the stromal extracellular matrix of the placentomes decreased as the pregnancy progressed. The endothelia of fetal and maternal vessels were positive for all proteins. The presence and distinct localization of cadherins and ECM proteins in the cow placentome components support the role of these molecules in regulating placental cell growth, migration, and matrix production during pregnancy.Öğe HISTOLOGICAL EXAMINATION OF THE EFFECTS OF LOW-LEVEL LASER THERAPY ON HEALING OF GINGIVA AFTER GINGIVECTOMY IN RATS(Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2013) Firat, Ela Tules; Dag, Ahmet; Gunay, Ahmet; Kanay, Berna Ersoz; Ketani, Sennur; Ketani, M. AydinLasers in dentistry find an increasing usage in recent years. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) on healing of gingiva after gingivectomy in rats. Forty-two male Wistar rats, 250 g to 300 g in weight, were used in this study. Gingivectomy was made to gingiva of mandibular incisors in all rats. The rats were divided into: group 1 (control group, non-irridated), and group 2 (experimental group, irridation-treated). After gingivectomy, a low-level laser therapy (LLLT) was applied to the side of the operation area. Treatment using a GaAlAs laser at a wavelength of 940 nm and a dose of 10 J/cm(2) began after surgery and was repeated on the 2nd, 4th and 6th day post-surgery. Seven animals from each group were sacrificed on the 7th, 14th and 21st day after surgery. Biopsies were performed for histological analysis. In the laser-treated grup, the histopathological findings revealed increased mitotic activity of fibroblasts and collogen synthesis on the 7th day, better formed epithelial layer, mild keratinization, collagen fibers and vascularization on day 14. On the 21st day after surgery, marked collagen fibers and vascularization was assesed according to the control group. The results of this study indicate that low-energy level laser therapy appeared to exert a positive effect in epithelization and wound healing after gingivectomy.Öğe Protective effect of Okuzgozu (Vitis vinifera L. cv.) grape juice against carbon tetrachloride induced oxidative stress in rats(Royal Soc Chemistry, 2012) Pirinccioglu, Mihdiye; Kizil, Goksel; Kizil, Murat; Ozdemir, Gultekin; Kanay, Zeki; Ketani, M. AydinThe consumption of fruits plays an important role as a health protecting factor. Grapes (Vitis vinifera L.) are believed to have health benefits due to their antioxidant activity. Okuzgozu is the largest among the grape varieties grown in Turkey. Carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) causes free radical generation in many tissues such as the liver, kidney, heart, lung, testis, brain and blood. Ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) is the only drug to treat primary biliary cirrhosis, but the effects remain controversial. The aim of the present study is to investigate the protective effect of Okuzgozu grape juice or UDCA against tissue damage induced by CCl4 in rats. The amount of total phenolics and flavonoids were found to be 1208.00 +/- 43.00 mu g ml(-1) as the gallic acid equivalent and 5.2 +/- 0.19 mu g ml(-1) as the quercitin equivalent in Okuzgozu grape juice, respectively. In vivo administration of CCl4 caused a significant increase of various biochemical parameters such as alanine amino transferase (ALT), aspartate amino transferase (AST), total bilirubin (TB) and a decrease in albumin (ALB) levels in serum or an increase in malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in the tissues when compared to a control. Administration of CCl4 along with Okuzgozu grape juice or ursodeoxycolic acid (UDCA) significantly reduces these changes. Histopathalogical studies also support the protective effect of the extract. This study demonstrates the protective activity of Okuzgozu grape juice and thus scientifically supports the usage of this fruit in various traditional medicines for the treatment of tissue disorders. The effect of Okuzgozu grape juice was comparable with that of UDCA.
