It was conducted in the surgery clinics of a university hospital in the southeast of Turkey from November 2019 to February 2020. The study sample consisted of 200 patients in preoperative period. Results: The average score of patients in preoperative period from the attitudes toward uncertainty scale was 49.04±14.81. The average age of patients included in the study sample was 49.17±16.96. 59.5% of patients were female, 43.5% of them had an education below graduate level and 84.5% of them had someone to help with home care. A statistically significant difference wasdetected between the average uncertainty score and age, having someone to help with home care, total number of hospitalizations, American society of anesthesiologists preoperative risk status prior to surgical intervention and presence of any chronic diseases (p<.05).Conclusion: Study findings indicate that patients in preoperative period had moderate levels of uncertainty. It was found that the patient’s age, having someone to help with home care, total number of hospitalizations, American society of anesthesiologists preoperative risk status and chronic disease variables affected the uncertainty levels. In the light of these results, it is thought that patients should be approached individually by taking these variables into consideration and the quality of patient support and their coping levels should be assessed.Öğe An Examination of the Relationship Between Spirituality and Life Satisfaction Among Patients Awaiting Corneal Transplantation in Türkiye(2024) Şen, Mehmet Ali; Genç, Hasan; Tanrıverdi, SeherBackground: Transplant surgery significantly influences patients’ spirituality and life satisfaction, reflecting the diverse beliefs and cultures of those awaiting the procedure. Aim: This study aimed to explore the relationship between spirituality and life satisfaction in patients awaiting corneal transplantation. Methods: This relational descriptive study involved 101 patients on the waiting list for corneal transplantation. Data were collected using a Patient Information Form, the Life Satisfaction Scale, and the Spirituality Scale. Percentage distribution, arithmetic mean, and Pearson correlation analysis were employed for data analysis. Results: The majority of the participants were married (95%), with 56.4% being male and 26.7% retired. About 46.5% had completed primary education. The mean Life Satisfaction Scale score among the patients was 21.83 ± 8.96, and the mean Spirituality Scale Score was 20.49 ± 4.15 before corneal transplantation. A positive, albeit weak, relationship was found between the patients’ life satisfaction and spirituality levels, which was statistically significant (p < 0.01, r=0.37). Additionally, a weakly positive and significant correlation was noted between age and life satisfaction (p < 0.05, r=0.19). Conclusion: The study found that patients exhibited high levels of life satisfaction and spirituality, with life satisfaction increasing alongside spirituality. It was therefore concluded that care should be provided to patients with a psychosocial and emotional approach, aiming to meet their spiritual needs and enhance their life satisfaction prior to corneal transplantation.Öğe Phytochemical compositions, antioxidant properties, enzyme inhibitory effects of extracts of four endemic Lathyrus L. taxa from Türkiye and a taxonomic approach(Sociedade Botanica do Brasil, 2023) Yıldırım, Bekir; Yılmaz, Mustafa Abdullah; Zengin, Gökhan; Genç, HasanLathyrus is an economically important genus, with different parts of some species used as foodstuff or animal feed. In this study, phytochemical compositions and bioactivities of Lathyrus brachypterus var. brachypterus, L. brachypterus var. haussknechtii, L. nivalis subsp. sahinii and L. tefennicus taxa which are endemic to Türkiye were investigated. Total phenolic and flavonoid contents (TPC, TFC) of methanolic extracts were detected. Then, phytochemical compositions, antioxidant features (radical scavenging (DPPH: 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl, ABTS: 2,2'-azino-bis(3 ethylbenzothiazoline) 6 sulfonic acid), reducing power (FRAP:Ferric ion reducing antioxidant power, CUPRAC:Cupric ion reducing antioxidant capacity), metal chelating activity (MCA), and the phosphomolybdenum assays (PDA)) and enzyme inhibitory properties of the extracts were also determined. The highest values were found at L. brachypterus var. brachypterus for TPC, L. brachypterus var. haussknechtii for TFC. The highest antioxidant properties were seen in extracts of L. brachypterus var. brachypterus in DPPH, ABTS, FRAP, CUPRAC and PDA assays, while in extract of L. nivalis subsp. sahinii in MCA. The highest enzyme inhibitory activity was found in extract of L. brachypterus var. brachypterus in tyrosinase and glucosidase assays, while in extracts of L. nivalis subsp. sahinii in AChE (acetylcholinesterase), BChE (butyrylcholinesterase) and amylase. Finally, a taxonomic evaluation was made by considering the phytochemicals.Öğe Psychological hardiness and spirituality in patients with primary brain tumors: A Comparative study(Springer, 2021) Baksi, Altun; Sürücü, Hamdiye Arda; Genç, HasanThe purpose of this research was to compare healthy individuals with patients having primary brain tumors (PBTs) with respect to their psychological hardiness and spirituality. In this study, a comparative and descriptive research design was employed. The research sample included 122 individuals: 61 patients with PBTs and 61 healthy individuals. When healthy individuals were compared with patients with PBTs, it was found that the patients with PBTs had significantly lower mean scores for spirituality and psychological hardiness. The study revealed that spirituality (beta = .661) and age (beta = - .270) were statistically significant predictors of psychological hardiness (p < .001). These variables explained 53% of the total variance. To decrease the negative effects of PBTs on psychological hardiness, nurses and other health staffs should focus on strategies that strengthen patients' spirituality.Öğe The Relationship Between Care Burden and Psychological Resilience of Caregivers of Elderly Surgical Patients: A Descriptive Study(2024) Tanrıverdi, Seher; Genç, Hasan; Sabağ, Muhammed El; Bakşi, İhsanBackground: The care burden on caregivers of elderly surgical patients causes physical, psychological, economic, and social problems arising from the care undertaken by the caregiver. The level of psychological resilience is important in coping with these problems. Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between care burden and the psychological resilience status of caregivers of elderly surgical patients. Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with caregivers of elderly surgical patients in the surgical clinics of educational research and a state hospital. The study was completed with 151 caregivers representing the population. The data were collected using the Patient Descriptive Characteristics Form, Caregiver Descriptive Characteristics Form, the ZARIT Care Burden Scale adapted to the clinic, and the Brief Psychological Resilience Scale. Statistical analyses were conducted using the Student T-test, the One- Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) test for comparing scale score averages between groups, and Pearson Correlation tests for examining the relationship between variables. Results: It was found that 52.3% of the patients in the study sample were male, 96.7% were married, and 15.9% were secondary school graduates. The study determined that the mean Care Burden Scale score of the caregivers of elderly surgical patients was 31.53 ± 8.94 at a mild level, and the mean score of Psychological Resilience was 17.29 ± 3.35 at a moderate level. The correlation analysis between the scales found a negative, weak relationship between care burden and psychological resilience, which was statistically significant (P < 0.01) (r=-0.34). Conclusion: It was observed that the psychological resilience levels of caregivers decreased as the care burden increased and that the psychological resilience levels decreased as the caregiving time per hour per day increased. New studies can be conducted to investigate whether interventions aimed at reducing the care burden are effective in increasing psychological resilience levels.
