Electroencephalography findings in patients with obsessive compulsive disorder
    (2004) Yaşan A.; Gürgen F.
Aim: The role of functional brain pathology in the etiology of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is often determined by proton emission tomography (PET), single photon emission computerized tomography (SPECT) and electroencephalography (EEG). EEG has important advantages including non-invasiveness, feasibility and cost effectiveness. The aim of this study was to compare EEG findings of OCD group with normal healthy controls and investigate the effects of some clinical and demographic factors in the OCD group on EEG findings. Methods: In this prospective study, 46 patients were diagnosed as OCD according to DSM-IV criteria in a psychiatry clinic between July 2003 and December 2003 were compared with forty-six normal healthy control who did not have any neurological or psychiatric disorders. Standard EEG recording was recorded only in the resting period without using any activation methods. Results: There was no significant difference between the patients and control group regarding sex and age (p>0.05). EEG abnormalities were found in 52.2% of OCD group and 13% of the control group (p<0.01). When all beta-waves were excluded, EEG abnormalities were found in 30.5% of OCD patients and 2.17% of the control group (p<0.01). The most common abnormal EEG findings found in the OCD group were slow, spike and sharp wave activities. These EEG findings were most commonly localized to left frontal and temporal lobe. Conclusion: The occurrence of EEG abnormality in one-third of OCD patients suggests the importance of functional brain anatomy in determining the etiology of OCD. Further detailed functional and electroencalpholographic studies are required for the evaluation of frontal and temporal lobe in OCD patients as most EEG abnormalities were located in those lobes.

Premarital sexual experience and its relationship with conservative sexual myths in male university students
    (2009) Eşsizo?lu A.; Yaşan A.; Yildirim E.A.
Objective: This study aims to identify premarital sexual behavior of male university students, and to determine the relationship between socio-demographic characteristics of sexual behavior and conservative Islamic sexual myths. Method: 463 male university students from various departments of the university where this study was carried out were reached with this purpose. Evaluations were made on 382 (84%) students who participated in the study and fulfilled the evaluation criteria. The participants filled out the socio-demographic data form, sexual experience information form and sexual myth form, in sequence. Results: The number of students who had experienced masturbation was 316 (82.7%), and the number who had experienced at least one sexual intercourse was 159 (41.6%). The rates of masturbation and experience of sexual intercourse were higher in those who did not perform their daily religious activities. Those with experience in masturbation and sexual intercourse had a lower rate of conservative sexual myths. Discussion: Although the mean age of first masturbation was compatible with literature data in our participants, mean age of first sexual intercourse was higher than that in western populations. This result supports the results of the studies carried out on Asian populations. Absence of a difference regarding socioeconomic characteristics in the groups with different sexual experience, urban or rural living not causing a significant difference for experience in masturbation and the majority of samples intensively performing their daily religious activities suggest that factors related with religion may play a role in sexual experience. The intensity of performing religious activities is an important factor influencing sexual experience in the premarital period. Those with sexual experience have a lower rate of conservative sexual myths. Detailed studies on through which effects religion can determine sexual experience are needed.
