Graft materials used in oral and maxillofacial surgery
    (2011) Alan H.; Unlu G.
Many studies have been done to get an ideal biomaterial but any materials which have features to regenerate lost tissues or provide to fill up bone defects haven't been found yet. All the materials that help to resolve the defiency which occur as a result of a factor on a living organism and turn it into a function or the ones that help to complete this deficiency in an order and quick way by the organism are called as "biomaterial". In this study, we aimed to present the information related to classification, using area and obtaining method of biomaterials.

Odontogenic abscess: A retrospective study (549 Case Between 1998-2008)
    (2009) Unlu G.; Agacayak S.; Tari V.; Alan H.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to prospectively evaluate a series of patients with severe odontogenic abscess. Patients and Methods: In this study, we retrospectively evaluated patients with odontogenic abscess treated at the Oral and Maxillofacial Department of Dicle University during a ten-year period between 1998 and 2008. In this study 549 patients were included. Among the patients, 324 (59.0%) were males and 225 (41.0%) were females. Standardized data collection included surgical and medical treatment, complications and clinical features information. Appropriate descriptive statistics were computed. Results: In 10 years (from 1998 to 2008) 549 patients were treated. Among the patients, 324 (59.0%) were males and 225 (41.0%) were females. Patients were treated by 67% (368) extraoral drainage and 33% (181) intraoral drainage. The most common abscess formation sites were mandibular posterior (74.8%-441 case), maxillar posterior (9.6%-53 case); maxillar anterior (8.9%-49 case) and mandibular anterior (6.5%-36 case) regions. Conclusions: This study indicated that severe odontogenic abscess can be life threatening. Intra oral and extra oral drainage may be useful for successful treatment of extensive odontogenic infection, which can be life threatening when medical therapy is ineffective.

Restoration of posterior edentulous spaces after maxillary molar intrusion with fixed appliances (Case report)
    (2010) Basaran G.; Ayna E.; Basaran E.G.; Unlu G.
This case report includes the mini screw supported intrusion of the extruded teeth due to the absence of its antagonist and fixed prosthetic rehabilitation supported with osseointegrated implants. Four mini-screws with 2 mm diameter and 10 mm length were placed in buccal and palatal regions of extruded molars in both left and right sides. The 4 mm intrusion was achieved with Ni-Ti closed spring and elastomeric chain in each side. After the intrusions of the extruded antagonist molars, dental implants were placed in edentulous areas. After 3 months of healing period, fixed prosthetic restorations were made. As the benefit of orthodontic intrusion of extruded molars, no endodontic treatment was needed in order to gain enough vertical space for prosthetic restoration of antagonist edentulous area and the masticatory function was successfully given to the patient.

A retrospective study of dento-alveolar injuries in Diyarbakir, Turkey
    (2009) Alan H.; Unlu G.; Tari V.; Agacayak S.
The purpose of this retrospective study was to determine the occurrence and the type of traumatic dental injuries managed by the University of Dicle, Faculty of Dentistry, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. A total of 539 patients were seen for dental injuries with 1597 tooth injuries. During a period of 22 years, among 539 patients with dentoalveolar injuries, 300 (55.7 %) had been involved in falls, 144 (26.7%) resulted from traffic accidents, 47 (8.7%) from assaults, 29 (5.3%) from animal kicking, 11 (2%) from accidents at work, 5 (1%) in accidents that were sports related, 4 (0.6%) from accidents of an unspecified nature. This study shows that dental injury rates and patterns in a Diyarbaki{dotless}r-Turkey region are similar to other populations.
