Öğe Relationship between SARS-CoV-2 Transmission Risk and Denture Cleaning Attitudes of Removable Denture Wearers: A Case-Control Study(Science Printers and Publishers Inc., 2021) Yilmaz B.D.; Deger Y.; Izgi A.D.; Tuncer M.C.OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) transmission risk and the oral hygiene behaviors of patients using removable dentures. STUDY DESIGN: A total of 220 removable dental prosthesis users were included in the study. Among them, 110 users diagnosed with the coronavirus disease were included in the case group and 110 unaffected users were included in the control group. A survey regarding their hygiene, prosthesis removal, and handwashing attitudes was completed by the participants. Measurable variables are presented as mean±standard deviation (SD) and categorical variables as numbers and percentage (%). RESULTS: Individuals in the case group had a significantly lower rate of handwashing with soap and water before prosthesis removal. Additionally, no significant difference was found between the frequencies of denture removal between the 2 groups. Furthermore, individuals who removed their prostheses more than 2 times a day had an increased rate of handwashing with soap and water. CONCLUSION: To prevent the transmission of SARSCoV-2, proper hand hygiene is important among individuals wearing removable dentures. Individual hand hygiene habits can affect transmission of the virus. Furthermore, dentists should educate their patients wearing removable dentures regarding proper hand hygiene and denture care to prevent further spread of the virus. (Anal Quant Cytopathol Histpathol 2021;43:471–476) © Science Printers and Publishers, Inc.Öğe Vimentin and tumor necrosis factor–? expression in peripheral nerves in experimental diabetic neuropathy(Science Printers and Publishers Inc., 2018) Baloglu M.; Çetin A.; Tuncer M.C.OBJECTIVE: To investigate the role of intermediate filaments and cytokines in peripheral nerve injury in experimentally induced diabetic rats. STUDY DESIGN: Male Sprague-Dawley rats were administered streptozotocin (STZ) 55 mg/kg/day intra-peritoneally to induce type 1 diabetes mellitus. At 2 days post-administration, the caloric intake from the tail vein was 250 mg/dL and the rats were considered to be diabetic. The diabetic and control groups were compared in terms of glucose values. Sciatic nerve specimens were taken for basic histology, immunohistochemistry, and western blot analyses. RESULTS: The blood glucose concentration in the diabetic rats was significantly increased (p<0.001). Histopathological examination of the diabetic group showed axonal degeneration with thinning in myelinated fibers, hypertrophy in Schwann cells, dilation in small blood vessels, and mononuclear cell infiltration in connective tissue areas. CONCLUSION: There was a deterioration in the myelination mechanism as a result of the influence of the intermediate filaments. The peripheral nerve caused the rapid development of axonal atrophy, resulting in the loss of nerve cells due to increased necrotic formation with cellular infiltration. © Science Printers and Publishers, Inc.
