Öğe Henna - Induced hemolytic anemia and acute renal failure(2001) Devecioğlu C.; Katar S.; Doğru Ö.; Taş M.A.Henna is a traditional cosmotic agent and is used worldwide, especially in the Middle East. Its active agent is lawsone (2-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone). Henna is not only applied to hands or hair as a cosmotic agent in traditional ceremonies, but is also applied to the body on lesions in the treatment of seborrheic dermatitis or fungal infections. However, its application over the body or in newborns is rare. Here we report a 27-day-old boy who developed hemolytic anemia and acute renal failure following topical application of henna to his abdomen, intertriginous region and legs to treat diaper rash.Öğe Neonatal tetanus in the southeast of Turkey: Risk factors, and clinical and prognostic aspects: Review of 73 cases, 1990-1999(2000) Yaramiş A.; Taş M.A.Although neonatal tetanus (NT) can be prevented by immunization of expectant mothers and by good hygiene and asepsis during delivery, it is still a common cause of neonatal mortality in developing countries. The objective of this study was to determine indicators in NT. We reviewed the clinical records of 73 neonates admitted to the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Ward of Dicle University Hospital, Diyarbakir, Turkey, with the diagnosis of NT. Delivery had occurred at home by untrained traditional birth attendants in all cases. None of the mothers had immunization with tetanus toxoid during pregnancy. The median age of infants at presentation was 7.3 days and the mean age at onset of symptoms was 5.6 ± 2.8 days. The overall mortality was found to be 52 percent. Mortality was significantly associated with an incubation period of 4.3 days or less and fever. The incidence of NT in Turkey is on the decline due to widespread tetanus toxoid use in pregnant women, but in some regions, especially in the so-called rural poor areas, there is still risk of preventable diseases. Hygienic deliveries and immunization of pregnant women are very important for the prevention of NT deaths, and universal prenatal care, including education programs on appropriate perinatal and cord care, can significantly reduce NT incidence and mortality in developing countries.Öğe An unusual diagnosis in a child presenting with hypercalcemia: Acute lymphoblastic leukemia(Gulhane Askeri Tip Akademisi, 2010) Taşkesen M.; Okur N.; Söker M.; Taş M.A.Hypercalcemia is a rare complication of acute lymphoblastic leukemia in childhood. We report a 4-year-old boy who presented with hypercalcemia and was diagnosed to have acute leukemia. The laboratory tests for main causes of hypercalcemia (Hyperparathyroidism, hypervitaminosis A and D, hyperthyroidism) were within normal limits. Hypercalcemia was treated with intravenous isotonic sodium chloride solution, furosemide and corticosteroids. In repeat laboratory tests performed on day 4 of admission, a normal complete blood cell count was found, but peripheral blood smear examination at this time revealed atypical lymphocytes. A bone marrow aspiration was performed, and 80% lymphoblasts were determined. The diagnosis of acute leukemia cannot be excluded in a patient with hypercalcemia and normal complete blood cell count and peripheral blood smear examination results. Repeat laboratory and detailed peripheral blood smear examinations are necessary to make a correct diagnosis in such cases. © Gülhane Askeri Ti{dotless}p Akademisi 2010.
