Öğe Effects of Nebivolol on Ischemia-Reperfusion Induced Testicular Injury in a Rat Testicular Torsion Model(Science Printers and Publishers Inc., 2021) Taş M.; Avınca O.; Karakoç Y.; Deveci E.OBJECTIVE: To investigate the antioxidant effects of nebivolol in spermatogenic cells against apoptotic and testicular inflammation in torsion-detorsion injury in rats by using TUNEL assay and immunohistochemical methods. STUDY DESIGN: Forty male rats were categorized into 4 groups: control group (abdominal wall was opened and closed), torsion group (left testis was rotated 720° clockwise around longitudinal axis of spermatic cord for 2.5 hours), torsion/detorsion group (after 2.5 hours of torsion process, the suture that fixed the testis to the tunica dartos was cut off for detorsion for the following 3 hours), and torsion/detorsion+nebivolol group (2.5-hour ischemia followed by administration of 10 mg/kg nebivolol 30 minutes prior to a 3-hour torsion/ detorsion). Biochemical assays (MDA, SOD, CAT, GSH) and histopathologic results were examined in the testicular tissue. TUNEL assay method was used for DNA fragmentation analysis in testicular seminiferous tubule sections. RESULTS: Nebivolol treatment seemed to prevent the increase in MDA levels of torsion-detorsion–induced testis. Statistically, SOD, CAT, and GSH activities were significantly decreased in the torsion/detorsion group, while they were increased in the torsion/detorsion+nebivolol group. In the torsion and torsion/detorsion groups, an increase in apoptosis was observed in the germ cells in the tubules, and it was seen that the application of nebivolol decreased germ cell apoptosis. CONCLUSION: Unilateral testicular torsion-detorsion causes testicular damage to the ipsilateral testis as evidenced by biochemical and apoptotic changes in the tissues and retains the morphological structure in the testes after nebivolol administration, after testicular torsion-detorsion damage, and decreased apoptotic index and inflammation. © Science Printers and Publishers, Inc.Öğe Haemopneumothorax due to blank cartridges gun injury(2007) Orak M.; Üstündağ M.; Sayhan M.B.; Taş M.; Güloğlu C.Blank cartridge guns, which are considered harmless, can be easily purchased by adults due to lack of legal regulations. We present this case because injuries caused by gunshot from modify blank cartridges may be fatal and are rarely encountered in emergency departments. A 20-year-old boy was brought to the emergency department since he had a wound on his left thorax by modify gunshot from blank cartridges. He had a moderate general condition, respiratory distress and pale appearance. There was an irregular edged, defective wound at left hemithorax localization with a dimension of 3×4 cm. Computed tomography of the thorax revealed contusion in the basal of the left lung. A mass education on danger and harm of these guns as well as legal regulations for restricted use seem to he necessary. Also, physicians should keep in mind that blank cartridge guns can cause fatal injuries.Öğe Intravitreal bevacizumab for diabetic macular edema(2012) Alakuş M.F.; Taş M.; Öner V.; Işcan Y.; Türkçü F.M.; Şimşek A.; Ünlü M.K.Purpose: To evaluate the effects of intravitreal bevacizumab administration on visual acuity (VA), intraocular pressure (IOP) and central foveal thickness (CFT) in patients with diabetic macular edema. Materials and Methods: İntravitreal bevacizumab injection was applied to 39 eyes of 35 patients that presented our clinic with diabetic macular edema, between December 2007 and December 2009. Before and 1 month after injection of 1,25 mg/ml bevacizumab VA,IOP and CFT was measured for each patient. On the second month, the second injection was applied to 29 eyes, and on the third month the third injection was applied to 12 eyes with persistent macular edema. Results: The mean VA increased from 0.206±0.17 to 0.294±22.1 month after first injection (p<0.05). The mean VA was 0.285±0.23 and 0.417±0.31 after second and third injections, respectively. The difference was statistically significant. The mean CMT was reduced from 464.5±115.35 to 332.11±127.60, 1 month after first injection (p<0.05). The mean CMT was 402.50±124.00 and 370.0±142.31 after second and third injections, respectively. The mean IOP was 13.11±2.80 mmHg before first injection, was 13.31±3.22, 13.72±3.04,14.27±2.72 mmHg after first, second and third injections respectively. Conclusion: There was significant difference between the mean IOPs after second and third injections.Öğe Protective role of lycopene on aflatoxin B1 induced changes sperm characteristics and testicular damages in rats(2010) Taş M.; Güney Saruhan B.; Kurt D.; Yokuş B.; Denli M.The aim of this study was to investigate if lycopene could diminish the adverse effects of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) on sperm characteristics, the testes, epididymis and oxidative stress in rats. A total of 28 adult male Wistar-Albino rats (8 weeks old weighing 180-220 g) were divided into four groups; Controls, lycopene treated rats (10 mg/kg BW, daily by gavage), AFB1 treated rats (2.5 mg/kg BW, single dose intra peritonal) and lycopene (10 mg/kg BW, daily by gavage) + AFB1 (2.5 mg/kg BW, single dose intra peritonal) treated rats. Traits of reproductive organs (testes and sperm characteristics, testicular histological findings and the testicular tissue oxidative status) were determined after 15 days of treatment. The sperm motility was significantly decreased while the rate of total abnormal sperms was significantly increased in rats treated with AFB1 alone compared to their levels in controls (P<0.001). The level of testes malondialdehyde (MDA) in rats treated with AFB1 was significantly higher than its level in controls (P<0.001). Treatment with AFB1 significantly decreased testes diameter and seminifer epithelium thickness (P<0.0001) when compared with the others. Similarly, the thickness of the germinative cell layer at seminifer tubul (ST) in rats treated with AFB1 was significantly smaller than controls. Treatment with lycopene significantly increased sperm motility (P<0.001) and alleviated the many negative effects of AFB1 on sperm characteristic and testicular damage in rats. In conclusion our results showed that consumption of 10 mg of lycopene/ BW given by gavage protected the rats to the toxicity of AFB1 when it is administrated as a single dose intraperitoneally.Öğe Short oestrus synchronization with PGF2?, estradiol and GnRH or hCG in lactating dairy cows(2008) Cirit Ü.; Taş M.; Bacinoglu S.; Özdas O.B.; Ak K.; Ileri I.K.The objectives of this study were to develop short oestrus synchronization methods allowing timed artificial insemination (TAI) in lactating dairy cows and to compare the synchronizing effects of the use of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), instead of a gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH), on ovulation and pregnancy rates. An additional goal was to determine the effects of the presence or absence of an active corpus luteum (CL) on the treatment efficacy at the beginning of treatment. Sixty-three cows at random stages of the oestrus cycle on the 50th-95th postpartum day were randomly distributed into two groups. Cows of GnRH group (n = 33) received prostaglandin F-two alpha (PGF, 0.150 mg), estradiol propionate (EP, 2 mg) and GnRH (50 ?g) in 24 hour intervals (PGF at hour 0; EP at hour 24 and GnRH at hour 48). Cows in the hCG group (n = 30) were treated in a similar manner to the GnRH group, but, alternately, these cows received hCG (500 IU, i.m.) instead of GnRH. All cows in the treatment group were inseminated timely 16-20 hours after GnRH or hCG injections regardless of oestrus signs. During the study, animals exhibiting natural oestrus were inseminated 10-12 hours later and served as controls (n = 44). Cows in the hCG group have significantly higher synchronized (P = 0.018) and total (P < 0.05) ovulation rates and shorter intervals between the last hormone injection and ovulation (P = 0.012) compared to cows in the GnRH group. In both GnRH and hCG groups, cows with an active CL at the beginning of the treatment have acceptable pregnancy rates (40.0% and 47.6% respectively, P > 0.05). The PGF/EP/GnRH and PGF/EP/hCG treatments resulted in comparable pregnancy rates after TAI of lactating dairy cows at random stages of the oestrus cycle relating to those inseminated at natural oestrus (33.3%, 40.0% and 40.9% respectively, P > 0.05).Öğe Thoracic ectopia cordis(2007) Orak M.; Üstündağ M.; Güloğlu C.; Sayhan M.B.; Taş M.Heart positioned outside the chest wall is known as ectopia cordis. Thoracic ectopia cordis (TEC) is extremely rare with a reported incidence of 5.5-7.9/million live births. It is classified as cervical, cervico-thoracic, thoracic and more commonly the thoraco-abdominal or abdominal types. TEC is classified as complete and incomplete. In complete thoracic ectopia cordis the naked heart is displaced outside thoracic cavity without pericardial coverage. In partial thoracic ectopia cordis the heart can often be seen to pulsate through the skin. In this study, we present one case of TEC and review the literature on this subject.
