Öğe Brain abcesses: Clinical analysis of twenty-five cases(Ege University Press, 2014) Yilmaz T.; Gül A.; Turan Y.; Aydin P.; Göçmez C.; Kamaşak K.; Hattapoğlu S.Objective: The aim of this study is to determine the clinical, radiological, and surgical characteristics of brain abscesses and to share our experience in their management. Method: Medical records of 25 patients with brain abscess were retrospectively reviewed. The clinical picture, radiological examinations, treatment methods, and patient outcomes were analysed. Results: Of 25 patients included in our study, 16 (64%) were male and 9 (36%) were female. The age range was 2 months to 60 years, with a mean age of 12 years. Fifteen patients had a predisposing condition. The main source of the abscess was extension of an ear or nose infection to brain (n=9; 36%). In 10 (40%) patients the source could not be shown. Eighteen (72%) patients had a solitary abscess while 7 (28%) had multiple abscesses. No proliferation was observed in bacteriological cultures in 13 (52%) patients. No recurrences were seen in patients undergoing abscess excision with craniotomy. Conclusion: A brain abscess is a surgical emergency. Abcess excision with cranitomy is an effective treatment method in brain abcess cases. The most important sources of brain abcess were neigboring ear and nose infections. Diagnosis and treatment of these infections can prevent formation of brain abcess.Early diagnosis and treatment of cases with brain abscess can save patients from life-threatening complications of this disease.Öğe The efficacy of doppler ultrasound on chronic suppurative otitis media(Acta Medica Mediterranea, 2015) Gül A.; Akdağ M.; Özkurt F.E.; Agüloğlu B.; Özkan H.; Aktürk A.; Yilmaz B.Aims: The diagnostic techniques used in the diagnosis of lateral sinus thrombosis are invasive and pose a risk of stroke. For this reason, we aimed to evaluate the efficiency of Doppler ultrasonography, a simple, fast, and non-invasive technique in this field. Materials and methods: Patients presenting at our clinic with one-sided, chronic suppurative otitis media were included in the study. Internal jugular vein and internal carotid artery Doppler tests were conducted on the patients. The healthy ears of the patients were used as the control group. The values were compared statistically. Results: A total of 40 patients were included in the study 17 male (42.5%) and 23 female (57.5%). Seventeen patients had suppurative otitis media with cholesteatoma, and 23 patients had suppurative otitis media without cholesteatoma. According to Doppler ultrasonography parameters, no statistically significant differences were observed. However, when the chronic suppurative otitis media patients were compared to those without cholesteatoma, the internal jugular vein diameter was found to be reduced significantly in the group with cholesteatoma (p=0.047). Conclusion: The results of our study suggest that Doppler ultrasonography can be considered as a useful, fast, easy, and noninvasive method in the prognosis of cases with suspected lateral sinus thrombosis.Öğe Evaluation of smell function changes in pregnancy(2015) Gül A.; Yilmaz B.; Karababa S.; Tuna S.F.; Özkurt F.E.; Yaman Yörük N.; Topçu İOBJECTIVES: This study aims to compare the olfactory function changes among pregnant women in varying trimesters and non-pregnant women.PATIENTS AND METHODS: Thirty-five healthy pregnant women and 14 non-pregnant women were included in the study. Volunteer pregnant women were divided into three subgroups including the first trimester, second trimester, and third trimester. All volunteers were tested with the smell bottle test battery. The content of the test was consistent with the Sniffin' sticks including three detailed olfactory function tests, namely olfactory threshold (OT), olfactory discrimination (OD), and olfactory identification (OI). Total results of these three tests were defined as TDI scores.RESULTS: TDI score and test scores of the pregnant women in the first trimester statistically significantly decreased compared to pregnant women in other trimesters and non-pregnant women (p<0.05). Pregnant women in the second and third trimesters had similar olfactory function scores to the non-pregnant women (p>0.05).CONCLUSION: The olfactory function changes are observed in women during pregnancy. In particular, decreased smell sensitivity in the first trimester returns to normal scores towards the end of pregnancy.Öğe The results of newborn hearing screening in diyarbaki{dotless}r children's hospital(2013) Gül A.; Aliosmanoğlu Ç.; Şengül E.Lack of early diagnosis of hearing loss, frequently observed in Congenital anomalies, results in disability related life-long difficulties in children. Speech and language development in the children, diagnosed early and in treatment, is in paralel to the speech and language development not-hearing disabled children. In this study, results for 2363 newborns, whose newborn hearing test was done betwen December 2010 and November 2011 at Diyarbaki{dotless}r Chidren Hospital, are presented. The screening method with the transient-evoked autoacoustic emission (TEOAE) test was performed in two steps. 385 newborns (16.2%) who could not pass the second test were sent for advanced control and treatment.
