A Comparative Analysis of Traditional Turkish Courtyards in Hot-Dry and Hot-Humid Climate
(King Saud Univ Press, King Saud Univ, 2024) Ergun, Rusen; Akin, Can Tuncay
Courtyards are important elements of traditional Turkish houses. In these buildings, the courtyard design, especially the geometrical form and interior features are different from each other depending on the climatic characteristics. This study aims to compare the courtyard designs in Diyarbakir (hot-dry) and Hatay (hot-humid) traditional architectures located in two different climates. While there are similarities in terms of square planned courtyard and the existence of landscape that contribute to the formation of shaded areas in the courtyards of Hatay and Diyarbakir, in terms of orientation, size/ratio and use of water element It was found that there are significant differences. It was found that the main purpose of the Diyarbak & imath;r courtyard was to escape from the sun, create shade, and provide evaporative cooling by increasing air humidity, while the main purpose of the Hatay courtyard was to create shade and benefit from the wind. The study is a guide for the preservation of the passive design features of traditional buildings and their use in modern buildings.

Post Occupancy Evaluation of the Library Building: Diyarbakir Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin Provincial Public Library
(Silesian Univ Technology, 2024) Demir Kayan, Hale; Ergun, Rusen
Libraries are one of the oldest public buildings in history. Their main goal is to provide access to and disseminate information. There are various types of libraries according to user profile and purposes such as university libraries, school libraries, national libraries, and public libraries. Public libraries have the most comprehensive library feature, serving all people for free. It is also a place for people's socialization and cultural activity. This study aims to evaluate the building performance of Diyarbak & imath;r Professor Doctor Fuat Sezgin Provincial Public Library. In the study, Post-Occupancy Evaluation method was used. The results were made about the design quality, indoor environment quality and service quality. The satisfaction index formula developed by Dominowski was used to analyse user satisfaction. The satisfaction level of design quality was determined as 69.38%, indoor environment quality satisfaction level of 72.79% and service quality satisfaction level as 68.48%. These results show that user satisfaction generally remains at a negative level. In this study, suggestions have been developed for increasing the satisfaction level of this library building and for new library building designs. It is thought that this study will be a guide to improving the quality of library buildings.

Reinterpretation of Passive Cooling Strategies in Hot And Dry Climate Traditional Architecture: Vents in The Building
(Penerbit Utm Press, 2024) Ergun, Rusen; Bekleyen, Ayhan
The building sector is among the most critical factors affecting environmental sustainability due to its impacts, such as energy consumption and greenhouse gas production. The reasons for energy consumption and greenhouse gas production in the building sector may vary according to climatic characteristics. In hot and arid climate regions, a significant portion of energy consumption is caused by indoor cooling, especially since the focus is on reducing the indoor temperature. In the periods when traditional architecture was developed, the lack of technological products that would increase energy consumption was effective in providing indoor air conditioning with passive design strategies. This study aims to identify the building openings for natural ventilation and cooling used in the traditional architecture of hot and dry climates and to analyze and evaluate their modern interpretations. A total of 235 award-winning projects were analyzed, and 21 were included in the study. In this context, it was determined that 16 different strategies used in traditional architecture were reinterpretation, and their modern interpretations were analyzed through award-winning projects. The traditional passive design strategies identified in this context have been adapted to modern architecture in 18 types. Wind orientators come to the forefront. In addition, it was determined that the strategies adapted to modern architecture are generally integrated. This study guides modern interpretations of traditional passive design strategies for sustainable building design. (c) 2024 Penerbit UTM Press. All rights reserved
