    The beneficiation of Bitlis Massif kyanite ore for use in ceramic materials

    A beneficiation procedure for possible refractory uses of Bitlis Massif (Turkey) kyanite ore has been developed and involves grinding to d(80) = 0.106 mm, de-sliming, mica flotation, iron oxide flotation and kyanite flotation. A concentrate containing 56-5% Al2O3, 39-01% SiO2, 0-8% Fe2O3, 0-18% TiO2, 0.09% Na2O, 0-1% K2O and 0.02% MgO was obtained at a mass recovery of 51.14% +/- 0.25%. This conforms to both the chemical and size specifications for ceramic uses required to meet American and Chinese standards. (C) 2004 Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining.     Desulfurization and deashing of Hazro coal via a flotation method

    In this study, desulfurization and deashing of Hazro coal via a flotation method were studied. For this purpose, experimental studies were conducted on the coal sample with ash, sulfur, volatile matter, and fixed carbon contents of 24.77%, 6.90%, 35.18%, and 38.06%, respectively, and two groups of flotation experiments were made. The effects of pH, collector amount, and various frothers (MIBC, AF 76, pine oil, DF 250) on the depressing and floating pyrite from Hazro coal were investigated in the first and second group flotation experiments, respectively. Flotation results indicated that, when compared to various frothers, the following order for the depressing of pyrite was obtained: MIBC > pine oil > AF 76 > DF 250. For the floating of pyrite, the following order was obtained: DF 250 > pine oil > AF 76 > MIBC. A concentrate containing 1.12% pyritic sulfur and 13.02% ash with a pyritic sulfur reduction of 66.86% was obtained from a feed that contained 4.95% pyritic sulfur and 24.77% ash. The flotation method removed most of the sulfate sulfur (> 90%) and 66.86% of the pyritic sulfur from the coal sample.

    Selective oil agglomeration in Sirnak asphaltite beneficiation

    In this study, the possibility of cleaning Sirnak asphaltite by the agglomeration method was investigated. Experimental studies were conducted on the asphaltite sample with ash, sulphur, volatile matter and fixed carbon contents of 44.8, 6.0, 38.0, and 17.2 wt%, respectively. For this purpose, laboratory tests were carried out to investigate the effects of grinding time, bridging liquid type, bridging liquid concentration, pulp density and agitator speed on the overall performance of the agglomeration process. Furthermore, the effects of sea water and lake water on the combustible recovery and ash contents of the agglomerated products were investigated. The optimum conditions determined were: grinding time: 50 min, bridging liquid type: 50% kerosene + 50% fuel oil, bridging liquid concentration: 30%, pulp density: 12.5%, stirring speed: 1800 rpm. It was found that the effects of sea water and lake water on the removal of ash were negative. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
