    Efects of isotretinoin on social anxiety and quality of life in patients with acne vulgaris: A prospective trial

    Social anxiety is common in acne patients and the effects of isotretinoin treatment on social anxiety symptoms have not yet been thoroughly investigated. The aim of the study was to assess the effects of isotretinoin treatment on the quality of life and social anxiety symptoms in a group of acne vulgaris patients. The Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale (LSAS) and Short Form-36 (SF-36) were administered to 39 (24 female and 15 male) patients with acne vulgaris who accepted isotretinoin treatment and agreed to participate in the study. The severity of acne was evaluated using the Global Acne Grading System. Thirty patients completed 6-month treatment with oral isotretinoin at 0.5-1.0 mg/kg daily doses. Measurements were repeated at the end of 6 months. Acne significantly improved over time in the study group. The mean performance avoidance score in LSAS and mean pain and social functioning scores in SF-36 were significantly better at the end of isotretinoin treatment. In conclusion, isotretinoin treatment improves the quality of life and social anxiety symptoms in acne patients.

    The mother who kept a padlock on the trousers of her daughter: A case report of schizophrenia

    In this article, a mother with schizophrenia with protecting behaviors leading to serious limitations of her eight-year-old daughter has been presented. The patient had first claimed her husband's sexual unfaithfulness and then his sexual abuse on her daughter. She believed that her husband had raped her child several times and he even presented his girl to other men including the relatives and the neighbors to get money. For this reason, at nights she slept with her daughter or stayed awake for watching her; and at daytime she put a padlock on her trousers zipper part especially when she went to school and kept the keys by herself. Therefore, the child's trousers were wetted several times and she sometimes urinated after cutting her trousers. When the padlock was thrown away three to four times, the patient had supplied new padlocks from a peddler. The patient had been treated in some other hospitals before and finally was hospitalized at our clinics and initiated antipsychotic medicine. The patient was discharged with relative improvement and has now been continuing the treatment with zuclopenthixol decanoate (once a week) for the last 2 years. This patient has been presented as a good example for the processes of concrete thinking and growing up familial problems in schizophrenia.
