Does Type 1 Diabetic Adolescents' Fear of Stigmatization Predict a Negative Perception Insulin Treatment?
(Sage Publications Inc, 2020) Arda Surucu, Hamdiye; Baran Durmaz, Gulbeyaz; Turan, Engin
The purpose of this study was to investigate stigmatization, sociodemographic/diabetes-related characteristics and parents-related characteristics as predictors of a negative perception of insulin treatment in adolescents with type 1 diabetes in Turkey. The study was carried out using a cross-sectional correlation design. The research sample included 80 adolescents with type 1 diabetes who volunteered to take part. A positive perception of insulin treatment (beta = -.38, p < .001), stigmatization (beta = -.24, p = .013), informing others about one's type 1 diabetes (beta = .24, p = .017) and only using insulin when alone in public places (beta = .19, p = .042) were significant predictors of a negative perception of insulin treatment, and these variables explained 35% of the common variance. Diabetes' nurses should take stigmatization into account during their training and plan appropriate measures. Entrepreneurial, randomized, and controlled studies should be conducted to decrease the negative influence of stigmatization on the perception of insulin treatment in individuals with type 1 diabetes.

Factors playing a role in the development of emotional labor behavior of clinical nurses
(Wiley, 2020) Baksi, Altun; Arda Surucu, Hamdiye
Purpose This study aimed to investigate spirituality, sociodemographic features, and occupational features as predictors of nurses' emotional labor. Design and Methods The study is descriptive cross-sectional and correlational research. Findings The results demonstrated that there was a statistically significant positive relationship between the nurses' spirituality and the subdimension of intimate behavior (r = .545) (P < .05). Regarding the nurses' in-depth behaviors, the study found that spirituality (beta = .550) and the number of patients that the nurses were responsible for (beta = -.154) were statistically significant predictors (P < .05). The subdimensions of superficial behavior, spirituality (beta = .498), and rechoosing the profession (beta = -.142) were statistically significant predictors as well (P < .05). Practice Implications For the development of emotional labor in clinical nurses, administrators should be sensitive to nurses' spiritual values.

Hope, Sociodemographic and Clinical Characteristics as Predictors of Stigma-Related Negative Discrimination Experiences of Patients With Primary Malignant Brain Tumor
(Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2021) Baksi, Altun; Arda Surucu, Hamdiye; Genc, Hasan
BACKGROUND: A brain tumor can cause specific dysfunctions including psychosocial problems, and neurological, cognitive, mental, personality, behavioral, body image, and self-concept changes. Hope is reported in previous studies as an important and protective factor during the difficult duration of the disease. The purpose of this study is to examine hope and related factors as predictors of the stigma-induced negative discrimination experience of patients with primary malignant brain tumor. METHODS: The relational research method was used. The study was conducted in neurosurgery and oncology clinics and outpatient clinics of a university hospital in Southeastern Turkey between July 2018 and March 2020. The research data were collected using an information form, the Discrimination and Stigma Scale, and the Dispositional Hope Scale. The research sample consisted of 124 patients with primary malignant brain tumor. The data were analyzed by stepwise multiple linear regression analysis. RESULTS: The average age of the patients with primary malignant brain tumor was 46.64 (+/- 12.00) years. Of all the patients, 61.3% were male, and 25% received radiotherapy. When the negative discrimination experience of patients with primary malignant brain tumor was examined, age (beta = -0.244, P = .004), total dispositional hope (beta = -0.225, P = .009), and currently receiving radiotherapy (beta = 0.169, P = .048) were determined to be significant predictors. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates the importance of hope, age, and treatment type in the negative discrimination experience of patients with primary malignant brain tumor. Initiatives taking hope into account should be planned by nurses and healthcare professionals to reduce patients' experience of negative discrimination.

Resilience, life satisfaction, care burden and social support of mothers with a child with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia: a comparative study
(Wiley, 2020) Baran, Gulbeyaz; Arda Surucu, Hamdiye; Hulya Uzel, Veysiye
The study aimed to make comparison between the resilience, life satisfaction, care burden and social support of mothers with a child with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) and those with a healthy child. The study was carried out using the comparative and descriptive methods, and the study group included mothers with ALL children hospitalised in the Paediatric Haematology Clinic of a university hospital (n = 51) and those with healthy children who applied to a family health centre (n = 53). While collecting the data, Personal Information Form, Resilience Scale for Adults, Life Satisfaction Scale, Zarit Care Burden Scale and Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support Scale were used. The data were statistically analysed using the SPSS program, percentages, mean scores, standard deviations, Mann-Whitney U test and pearson correlation. For the comparison of the personal information about the mothers with ALL children and about those with healthy children, chi-square or student t test for independent groups depending on the data set was used. When the mothers with ALL children were compared with those with healthy children, it was found that the methods with ALL children had statistically lower mean scores for life satisfaction (13.92 +/- 6.26, p < 0.001) and resilience (17.90 +/- 7.09, p < 0.001) and statistically higher mean scores for care burden (42.23 +/- 16.54, p < 0.05). In this study, when the mothers of ALL children were compared with those of healthy children, it was found that the former had lower levels of resilience and life satisfaction and higher levels of care burden.
