Öğe Comparison of traditional and novel remineralization agents: A laser fluorescence study(Kerman Univ Medical Sciences, 2020) Aras, Ahmet; Celenk, Sema; Atas, OsmanBACKGROUND AND AIM: The first clinical symptom of tooth decay is the appearance of a white spot lesion (WSL) on the tooth surface. This study is performed with the aim to evaluate the efficacy of six different remineralization agents in vitro with the DIAGNOdent laser fluorescence method. METHODS: In this study, 44 extracted, impacted human wisdom teeth (88 specimens) without caries were used to obtain standard demineralized enamel surfaces. The teeth were divided into eight groups consisting of two control (positive and negative) and six experimental groups [Fluoride (F) gel, casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP) cream, CPPACP + F cream, NovaMin + F toothpaste, Xylitol-Hydroxyapatite + F cream, and Ozone + F]. De-/re-mineralization solutions were applied with a pH-cycle approach to areas of 3 x 3 mm on the buccal/lingual surfaces of the teeth for 9 days. The remineralization agents were applied to the demineralized areas and the samples were then kept in artificial saliva. The DIAGNOdent measurements were performed before and after the application of the remineralization agents. The Wilcoxon and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used for analysis of the data. RESULTS: The mean scores obtained after the DIAGNOdent measurements were 3.82 and 6.91 in the negative-control and positive-control groups, respectively. There were significant differences in the scores before and after the remineralization procedure in all experimental groups (P < 0.050). When the mean differences before and after treatment were compared between the groups, CPP-ACP + F provided significantly more remineralization than other experimental groups (P < 0.050). CONCLUSION: Remineralization of demineralized areas was achieved in all experimental groups. The highest degree of remineralization according to the DIAGNOdent scores before and after the procedure was observed in the CPP-ACP + F group.Öğe Effects of toothache on the educational and social status of children(Univ Indonesia, 2019) Dogan, Mehmet S.; Aras, Ahmet; Atas, Osman; Karaali, Abdullah E.; Gunay, Ayse; Akbaba, Haluk M.; Yavuz, IzzetBackground: Untreated tooth cavities and the resulting toothaches have significant effects on children's social and psychological development. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of toothache on children's educational and social activities. Methods: For this retrospective study, we issued a 15-question survey to the parents of 515 children between ages of 5-16 years in Diyarbakir, Turkey. The chi-square test was used to test the strength of the relationship between two variables (p = 0.05). Results: 318 (61.7%) parents reported having difficulty in feeding their children, 94 (18.3%) left a game due to toothache, 173 (33.6%) had school absences, 167 (32.4%) avoided laughing, and 439 (85.2%) parents felt that dental problems influenced their child's success in school. Conclusions: Tooth pain has a negative impact on school and the social lives of children. Families need education about this issue, and health policies should be developed to address this problem.Öğe Farklı koruyucu uygulamaların mine yüzeyinde oluşturulan demineralize alanlara etkilerinin in-vitro olarak değerlendirilmesi(2015) Aras, AhmetÇalışmamızda APF, CPP-ACP, CPP-ACFP, Ozon+florit, Novamin+florit içerikli diş macunu ve Ksilitol+florit içerikli kremin mine üzerinde oluşturulan demineralize alanlara etkisinin in vitro koşullarda değerlendirilmesi amaçlanmıştır. Çalışmamızda kök gelişimi tamamlanmış toplam 172 adet sağlam üçüncü büyükazı dişi, mesio-distal yönde 2 parçaya bölünerek, deneyler sırasında kullanılmak üzere toplam 344 adet mine örneği elde edildi. Deney materyallerinin opak mine lezyonları üzerindeki etkinliğinin değerlendirilmesi amaçlandığından mine yüzeylerinde başlangıç mine lezyonu oluşturuldu. Ağız ortamındaki gün boyu değişen pH değişikliklerini taklit etmek amacıyla dişler 9 gün süren pH döngüsüne tabi tutuldu. Ardından dişlerin mine yüzeyine remineralize edici ajanlar uygulandı ve etkileri incelendi. Minede oluşan demineralizasyon ve remineralizasyonun belirlenmesi amacıyla 7 ayrı test yöntemi uygulandı. Uygulanan tedavilerin mine yüzeyinde oluşturduğu mineral kaybı ya da kazancının miktarının kalitatif olarak hesaplanabilmesi amacıyla Vicker’s Mikrosertlik Testi, asit içerisinde sert dokulardan çözünen kalsiyum ve fosfat iyonlarının tayini amacıyla Endüktif Eşleşmiş Plazma-Atomik Emisyon Spektrometre (ICP-AES), sağlam mine yüzeylerinde oluşturulan opak mine lezyonunun ve uygulanan tedavi edici ajanların mine yüzeyinde oluşturduğu mineralizasyon değişiklikleri Lazer Floresan (DiagnoDent), minede oluşturduğumuz başlangıç çürük lezyonunun yapısı ve tedavi sonrasında oluşan değişikliklerin belirlenebilmesi amacıyla Taramalı Elektron Mikroskobisi (SEM-EDX) ve Atomik Kuvvet Mikroskobu (AFM), organik yapının belirlenmesi için Fourier Dönüşümlü Kızılötesi Spektroskopisi (FTIR) kullanıldı. Elde edilen verilerin istatistiki analizleri One-way ANOVA ve Post Hoc testleri kullanılarak yapıldı (p<0,05). Sonuç olarak; kullanılan tüm testlerden elde edilen verilere göre tüm deney gruplarında remineralizasyon sağlanabildiği görüldü. Yeni nesil remineralizasyon ajanlarından CPP-ACFP, Novamin ve Ksilitollü patların diğer ajanlardan daha fazla remineralizasyon sağladıkları görüldü. Son olarak, floritin diğer remineralizasyon ajanlarıyla birlikte kullanımlarının sinejistik etki gösterdiği tespit edildi.Öğe Microleakage of novel glass ionomer restoration in cavities prepared by Er,Cr:YSGG laser: An in-vitro study(Wolters Kluwer Medknow Publications, 2020) Atas, Osman; Celenk, Sema; Aras, AhmetAim: To compare the microleakage of novel materials containing glass ionomer, which are applied to standard class V cavities prepared by Er,Cr:YSGG (erbium, chromium-doped yttrium, scandium, gallium, and garnet) laser and by conventional diamond bur in primary teeth. Materials and Methods: Fifty non-carious primary molar teeth were randomly divided into five main groups and restored with various materials containing glass ionomers (Group 1: Equia System; Group 2: Fuji IX GP; Group 3: Fuji II LC; Group 4: Dyract Extra; and Group 5: Giomer). Each group was divided into two subgroups according to laser and conventional preparation methods. Results: As for the gingival margin, in terms of leakage values, no statistically significant difference was observed between drill and Er,Cr:YSGG laser although less microleakage values were obtained in Er,Cr:YSGG laser groups 1 and 4 (P > 0.05). Among groups prepared by drill, the lowest leakage rates observed at the gingival margin are Equia System, Giomer, Dyract Extra, Fuji II LC, and Fuji IX GP, respectively. Among groups prepared by Er,Cr:YSGG laser, the lowest leakage rates observed in the gingival edge are Equia System, Giomer = Dyract Extra, Fuji IX GP, and Fuji II LC, respectively. Conclusion: Occlusal and gingival microleakage scores were the lowest in the groups restored with Equia system in the cavities prepared by both diamond bur and laser system. Equia system consisting of high-viscosity glass ionomer cement and nano-filled surface coat G-Coat Plus materials could be used successfully in pediatric dentistry.
