Öğe A Comparative Analysis of Traditional Turkish Courtyards in Hot-Dry and Hot-Humid Climate(King Saud Univ Press, King Saud Univ, 2024) Ergun, Rusen; Akin, Can TuncayCourtyards are important elements of traditional Turkish houses. In these buildings, the courtyard design, especially the geometrical form and interior features are different from each other depending on the climatic characteristics. This study aims to compare the courtyard designs in Diyarbakir (hot-dry) and Hatay (hot-humid) traditional architectures located in two different climates. While there are similarities in terms of square planned courtyard and the existence of landscape that contribute to the formation of shaded areas in the courtyards of Hatay and Diyarbakir, in terms of orientation, size/ratio and use of water element It was found that there are significant differences. It was found that the main purpose of the Diyarbak & imath;r courtyard was to escape from the sun, create shade, and provide evaporative cooling by increasing air humidity, while the main purpose of the Hatay courtyard was to create shade and benefit from the wind. The study is a guide for the preservation of the passive design features of traditional buildings and their use in modern buildings.Öğe Preservation initiatives for the truncated pyramid-shaped traditional houses of Siirt, Turkey(Elsevier Science Bv, 2016) Akin, Can Tuncay; Bekleyen, Ayhan; Yildirim, MucahitThe traditional houses of the residential areas in and around Siirt in the southeastern region of Turkey are notable because of their interesting forms. In this study, the structures of small-scale settlements in Siirt province and its environs have been evaluated to highlight the cultural aspects of the region. The subject of this research is to investigate the design principles of the rural houses constructed in vernacular style to raise international awareness of the need to preserve vernacular architecture. Surviving examples have been examined in terms of multiple case approach by their forms, spatial compositions, changes in their forms over time, their layouts in urban and rural areas, the construction techniques used to produce them from material production through implementation, the composition of the living space and its uses, their differences or similarities to other houses in the region and their aesthetic details. The research reveals that the design principles of traditional rural architecture offer the use of local material and techniques in a unique way that promote highlights to the future. Oguz; Akin, Can Tuncay; Karacay, NeseCity planning is essential for providing physical environment for better community life and for providing green areas, while conserving historical heritage is an important achievement in city planning, particularly for historical cities such as Diyarbakir city. The focus of this paper is to outline how increasing the ratio of green area in the city centre of Diyarbakir, Turkey, with a land-use betterment model exemplified sustainable urbanism. We observed an applied urban design project that included both opening up free space to the public and increasing the amount of available green area. The project addressed an area adjacent to the Diyarbakir city walls, which are important not only for their history but also as reflections of the urbanization process of Diyarbakir from prehistoric time to the twenty-first century. We have noticed that changes in the design area provided understanding of the city planning by public and supplied more green areas for children and women. Thus, the city became more desirable and more sustainable.Öğe The Social and Spatial Reflections of Culinary Culture on Traditional Diyarbakir Houses(Milli Folklor Dergisi, 2014) Ozyilmaz, Havva; Aluclu, Iclal; Akin, Can TuncayThe effect of the production traditions, the nomad settled life, the religion of Islam have appeared oh dwelling types.
