Alprazolam and cognitive behavior therapy in treatment of panic disorder
    (2000) Ataoglu A.; Özkan M.; Tutkun H.; Maras A.
Panic is an often incapacitating and chronic disorder. Cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) and alprazolam have been shown to be effective in the treatment of panic disorder. Patients who met the DSM-III-R criteria for panic disorder, were randomized and given 16 weeks of double-blind treatment with CBT (n=16), or alprazolam of up to 6 mg/day (n=18). The 17-item HAM-D and HAM-A scales were administered to all the subjects and after treatment, which took place over 16 weeks, and the changes in the scores were analyzed. The patients' anxiety levels and numbers of panic attacks were assessed at the beginning of treatment, and then at weeks 4, 8, 12 and 16 by means of self-monitoring. On the basis of HAM-D, HAM-A, anxiety level, and panic number, the CBT and alprazolam groups showed a significant improvement at the end of treatment. When compared to each other, the groups showed no significant differences at the end of the treatment. In the last month, 10/16 (62.5%) of the CBT patients and 11/18 (61.1%) of the alprazolam patients were panic-free.

    Inhalant-related disorders
    (2001) Altinda? A.; Özkan M.; Oto R.
Inhalant drugs (sometimes called "volatile substances") are widely available and frequently misused, especially by adolescents. Abuse of inhalants is a persistent world-wide problem crossing cultural and geographic borders. It has been observed that inhalant abuse becomes more prevalent in Turkey. Among adolescents inhalants are the most commonly used drug, except for alcohol and tobacco. Some social and cultural groups are at risk for inhalant abuse. It has been suggested that inhalant abuse is a risk factor for antisocial personality disorder and other substance misuses. Chronic usage of these substances in higher concentration can produce serious medical problems. Inhalant-related disorders require full psychiatric assessment and appropriate treatment depending on the nature of psychiatric disorder. During and after such treatment, consideration needs to be given to ways in which the youngster can be rehabilitated and helped to avoid re-involvement in the habit.

The pharmacological treatment of psychotic depression
    (2001) Altinda? A.; Özkan M.
Psychotic depression is a severe form of mood disorder characterized by delusions or hallucinations. Patients with psychotic depression have a considerably better response rate to the combination of a tricyclic antidepressant with an antipsychotic or the combination of serotonin selective reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) with an antipsychotic, amoxapine, or electroconvulsive therapy. The SSRIs alone or atypical antipsychotics alone have yet to receive any widespread recognition, despite some recent studies which indicate that they might be recommended as first-line treatment in psychotic depression. In this paper, the studies about the pharmacological treatment of psychotic depression were reviewed.

Premarital sexual attitudes and experiences in university students
    (2009) Yasan A.; Tamam L.; Özkan M.; Gürgen F.
Although premarital sex is common in many western societies, it is quite limited particularly in eastern societies. We aimed of in this study; on premarital sexual attitudes/ behaviors and related factors in University students. Among our subjects, we found that premarital masturbation rates among women and men were 26.47% and 83.60% respectively. We also found that the rates of having coitus with another person were 5.88% in women, and 39.92% in men. We found showed that premarital sexual attitudes and behaviors were more liberal than those in societies living within traditional Islamic culture, and more conservative than those in developed societies. Because of increase in premarital sexual experiences, in unwanted pregnancy rates and sexually transmitted diseases, sexual education and studies facilitating the access to sources of information are needed to prevent these problems from affecting youth psychologically and physiologically.
