An experimental study on mycelial development period of some Pleurotus species, P-ostreatus, P-sapidus and P-sajor-caju, on the media that contain certain amount of barley crumb or wheat flour.
Abstract
Cultivation of Pleurotus species as mushroom is becoming important throughout the world because of their abilities to grow in a wide range of temperatures, on various types of medium and their shorter cultivation time. The purpose of this study is to determine whether the media that contain 1% malt extract and 1%, 1.5% or 2% wheat flour or barley crumb significantly decrease the mycelium development period of Pleurotus species, P. ostreatus, P. sapidus and P. sajor-caju, compared with the media that merely contains 1% malt extract and to establish which media is more appropriate to produce mycelia of these species vegetatively. As a result, of this study, the media that contain 1% barley crumb and 1% malt extract for P. ostreatus, 1.5% barley crumb and 1% malt extract for P. sapidus, and 1.5% barley crumb and 1% malt extract for P. sajor-caju has been suggested.
