Ancak günümüzde gerek coğrafi şartlar gerekse çevresel koşullar nedeniyle Boğazların gemi geçiş trafiği yoğunluğunu azaltmak, bölgeyi daha güvenli bir hale getirmek, ekonomik ve siyasi açıdan da daha büyük faydalar sağlamak adına 2011 yılında Kanal İstanbul Projesi adı altında Boğazlara alternatif bir suyolu oluşturulmak istenmiştir. Ancak bu projenin Montrö Boğazlar Sözleşmesi’ne nasıl bir etki edeceği konusu günümüzde halen tartışma konusudur. Bu bağlamda Kanal İstanbul Projesi Montrö Boğazlar Sözleşmesi kapsamında olası riskleri ve fırsatları incelenecektir. Lozan Barış Antlaşması ile başlayan Montrö ile devam eden Boğazların uluslararası statüsünün günümüze yansıması tüm yönleri ile ele alınacaktır.The Straits, which entered into force under the Treaty of Lausanne and had a national status, gained a special status with the 1939 Montreux Convention. However, today, due to both geographical and environmental conditions, it was desired to create an alternative waterway to the Straits under the name of Kanal Istanbul Project in 2011 in order to reduce the density of ship transit traffic in the Straits, to make the region safer, and to provide greater economic and political benefits. However, the issue of how this project will affect the Montreux Straits Convention is still a matter of debate today. In this context, the potential risks and opportunities of the Kanal Istanbul Project within the scope of the Montreux Straits Convention will be examined.
