It is spontaneously and traumatically divided into two. While spontaneous pneumomediastinum is generally found in healthy young men, traumatic pneumomediastinum may develop due to skull, neck, chest traumas and intraoral injuries. Pneumomediastinum is a clinical state with high morbidity and mortality due to complications it causes.
