Her biri farklı kökenlere sahip bu yaklaşımlar, sosyal konuları çalışmak için farklı analiz yolları sunmaktadır. Derin felsefi tarihi ile realizm, teorik çalışmaların ampirik verilerle ilişkisinin kurulmasına büyük önem vermektedir. Öte yandan, yapısalcı teori yapı-fail, determinizm-gönüllülük ve nesnellik-öznellik ikilemlerini aşma çabasındadır. Dolayısıyla, yapısalcı teori, sosyal yapılar ve fail (insan) arasındaki etkileşimleri, zaman ve mekanın göreceliğinin sosyal teorisi vasıtasıyla anlamaya çalışmaktadır. Zaman ve mekanın göreceliği yaklaşımı yapısalcı teoriyi coğrafyacılar için cazip kılarken, realizmin öznellik, bilimsel bilginin üretimi ve geçerliliği ve araştırmacının pozisyonu gibi konularda ortaya attığı ontolojik ve epistemolojik sorular ve sergilediği eleştirel yaklaşım coğrafyacıların bu yaklaşımı akademik çalışmalarına entegre etmesiyle sonuçlanmıştır.In this study, I compare and contrast Realizm and structuration theory, two important approaches in human geography. Each approach has different origins and provides different ways of analysis for studying social issues. Realizm with its deep philosophical history emphasizes the importance of linking theoretical work with empirical data. On the other hand, structuration tries to overcome the dualisms such as structure-agency, determinism-voluntarism, and objectivism-subjectivism. Therefore, stucturation theory tries to understand the interactions between human agency and social structures through an introduction to social theory of relative views of time and space, which made structuration theory more interesting to geographers.
