Araştırmada, “Matematik yapmak doğuştan sahip olunan bir yetenek mi, yoksa sonradan geliştirilebilir mi?”, “Başarılı öğrenci kimdir?” ve “Matematik nasıl çalışılır?” gibi sorulara yönelik katılımcıların inançları değerlendirilmiştir. Nitel bir yaklaşımla yürütülen araştırmada, gelişimsel araştırma türlerinden biri olan kesit alma (Cross-sectional) yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın örneklemi, 10 lise matematik öğretmeni ve 2 matematik öğretmeni adayından oluşmaktadır. Araştırmada veri toplama aracı olarak, araştırmacı tarafından geliştirilen ve açık uçlu sorulardan oluşan bir görüşme formu kullanılmıştır. Görüşmelerden elde edilen nitel veriler, Baxter-Magolda’nın Epistemolojik Yansıtma Modeli esas alınarak içerik analizine tabi tutulmuştur. Çalışmanın sonunda katılımcıların tamamı öğrencinin rolü açısından bağımsız bilme düzeyinde bulunmuşlardır. Ancak araştırmaya katılan bazı öğretmenlerin, matematiksel yetenek ile ilgili olarak, özellikle başarısız öğrencilere yönelik olumsuz görüşlere sahip oldukları belirlenmiştir. Araştırmanın bulgularına dayalı olarak, öğretmenlerin epistemolojik inançlarının geliştirilmesi ve sınıf içi uygulamalarının takip edilerek desteklenmesi gerektiği konusunda önerilerde bulunulmuştur. Ayrıca matematiksel yetenek hakkında katılımcıların görüşlerine dayalı bir sınıflandırma inşa edilmiştir.This research was conducted to determine the belief of high school mathematics teachers and teacher candidates about mathematics ability. In the study, the beliefs of participants were evaluated through the questions such as “Is mathematics an innate gift or can it be improved later?” “Who is the successful student?” and “How mathematics can be studied?” questions were evaluated. In the study which was conducted with a qualitative approach, cross-sectional method was used among one of the developmental research types. The sample of the study consisted of 10 high school mathematics teachers and 2 mathematics teacher candidates. In the study, a questionnaire form was used as a data collection tool which was developed by the researcher consisting of open-ended questions. The qualitative data obtained from the interviews were subjected to content analysis through considering the Epistemological Reflection Model of Baxter - Magolda. At the end of the study, all of the participants were found at the independent knowing level in terms of the role of the student. However, some of them have negative opinions about mathematical talent especially towards unsuccessful students. Based on the findings of the research, there can be suggested that teachers’ epistemological beliefs should be developed and their practices in lessons should be followed and supported.
