In the tissues associated with the immun system, three groups of lymphocytes can be identified according to size; small, medium, and large. Lymphocytes are the most common agranulocytes and account for about 30% of the total blood leukocytes. Two functionally distinct types of lymphocytes are present in the body: T lymphocytes (T cells, tymus-depend ed lymphocytes) and B lymphocytes (B cells, in the Bursa of Fabricus in birds). These two cell types are indistinguishable in blood smears or tissue sections, but electron microscopy enzyme cytochemistry, immunofluorescence and immunocytochemical staining for different types of receptors on their cell surface must be used to identify them. B lymphocytes may divide several times, producing more B lymphocytes and large clones of cells that differentiate into plasma cells involved in the production of antibodies.T lymphocytes may undergo several rounds of cell division, producing cells that differentiate into T lymphocytes (cytotoxic T lymphocytes, helper T lymphocytes, or supressor T lymphocytes ).
