    Analysis of the Relationship between Geometrical and Algebraic Thinking Levels of 8th Grade Students

    This research aims to analyze the relationship between geometrical and algebraic thinking levels of 8th grade students. For this purpose survey method was used in the study. The participants of the study consist of 515 students from eight different schools in Diyarbakir city central districts during 2010-2011 Education Year Spring Semester. In present research Geometric Thinking Test developed by Usiskin (1982) and was adapted to Turkish by Duatepe (2000) has been employed to detect geometric thinking levels of students. In determining algebraic thinking levels of students Algebraic Thinking Test developed Hart vd. (1998) and was adapted to Turkish by Altun (2005) was used. According to the results obtained from the study, it is determined that 8th grade students focus level-1 (visual level) in terms of geometric thinking levels and level-0 in terms of algebraic thinking levels. It was determined that, gender is not an effective variable on students' geometric and algebraic thinking levels. In this research it has also been pointed out that positive, moderate and significant relationship between geometrical and algebraic thinking levels of students.

    The evaluation of the student teachers' attitudes toward Internet and democracy

    The aims of this study are to find out (1) how student teachers' attitudes toward Internet affect their attitudes toward democracy, (2) how student teachers' attitudes toward democracy are in terms of their purpose of using Internet and (3) benefits provided by the Internet. The research is carried out in Ziya Gokalp Education Faculty at Dicle University during 2005-2006 academic year by the participation of 440 student teachers in total. Likert Type Attitude Scale Toward the Use of Internet, was used to determine the student teachers' attitudes toward the Internet and The Attitude Scale Toward Democracy was used to find out the attitudes of the student teachers toward democracy. The data are analyzed by using variance analysis and correlation (Pearson) techniques. Scheffe test is used for significance test. A positive significant correlation was determined between subscales (using Internet in teaching, using Internet in research, liking to use Internet in teaching, using Internet in communication and using Internet in sharing information) of attitude scale towards using Internet and subscales (inclination to democracy, devotion to democracy and qualities of democracy) of attitude scale towards democracy. However, a negative significant correlation is found between the attitudes of student teachers toward using Internet in teaching, using Internet in research, liking to use Internet in teaching and negative view to democracy. According to student teachers' purpose of using Internet, the difference between their attitudes towards devotion to democracy and qualities of democracy is significant. In addition, the difference between their attitudes toward devotion to democracy is significant in terms of the benefits provided by Internet. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

    Investigation of Prospective Teachers' Metacognitive Awareness in terms of Some Variables

    The purpose of this study is to examine the metacognitive awareness of prospective teachers according to their gender, field of study and the average number of books they read in a year excluding textbooks. The study was conducted in accordance with this purpose, and the sample of the study consists of prospective teachers who were senior students at Dicle University Ziya Gokalp Faculty of Education in the 2014-2015 academic years spring semester and 1475 randomly selected prospective teachers in the teacher certification program. In the study, the 52-item Metacognitive Awareness Inventory was used in order to determine the metacognitive awareness levels of prospective teachers. The inventory was originally developed by Schraw and Dennison (1994) and it was adapted to Turkish by Akin, Abaci and Cetin (2007). The findings of the study reveal that the metacognitive awareness of prospective teachers does not differ significantly in the total extent of the scale according to their gender, but differs significantly according to their field of study and the average number of books they read in a year excluding textbooks.

    Science High School Students' Perceptions of Science High Schools in Turkey

    The aim of this study is to investigate the 10th, 11th and 12th grade science high school students' perceptions of science high schools where they are educated. The study, which is carried out by using qualitative research methods, is a based on multiple case study model. The study group of the study consisted of 69 students studying at 10th, 11th and 12th grades. An interview form prepared by the researchers was used as a data collection tool. The data were analysed by using descriptive analysis and content analysis approaches. As a result of data analysis, it was concluded that science high school students mostly choose science high schools because of their qualified education and teachers. It has been found out that science high schools, in general, aim at educating qualified students, and enabling them to enter good universities. It has been further concluded that the students' social opportunities and experimental training in school environment should be augmented. With the students' opinions, it has emerged that science high schools are advantageous in terms of their level of achievement, qualified education, and good prospects; and disadvantageous in terms of high expectation and psychological pressure resulting from some other factors.

    Student Teachers' Classroom Management Anxiety: A Study on Behavior Management and Teaching Management

    The purpose of this study is to examine student teachers' anxiety related to classroom management in terms of behavior and teaching management. The study is carried out with the participation of 700 student teachers attending Ziya Gokalp Education Faculty at Dicle University in the 20072008 academic year. In order to determine their anxiety levels concerning behavior management and teaching management, the scales of behavior management anxiety and teaching management anxiety are used. Data are analyzed with correlation (Pearson), t test, and analysis of variance techniques. The Scheffe test is used to test significance. According to the student teachers' participation to school experience and to their branches, significant differences are determined between all subscales of behavior management anxiety levels.
